Man charged with impersonating soldier

A 47-year-old North Glengarry man has been charged with unlawful use of a military uniform.

Simon De Rothschild was arrested November 2 when Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry OPP officers observed a male in a Canadian military uniform soliciting funds for a charitable organization.

An investigation revealed that the man did not have authorization to wear the uniform.

He was released and scheduled to appear in Alexandria court Dec. 12.

I'm guilty, says murder accused

"I did the crime, I'll do the time," declared the man accused of killing Emilie Maheu when he appeared in Cornwall court Friday.

Brandon Smeltzer was charged with first-degree murder after the body of the 26-year-old Green Valley woman was found in a field near Lancaster October 13.

The 25-year-old man from Bayside, Nova Scotia later stated that he would "be with Emilie soon.”

He was put on suicide watch.

Uttering threats charge

A Montréal man has been charged after Ontario Provincial Police officers intercepted a vehicle Thursday on Highway 401 in South Glengarry Township. The driver became aggressive with officers upon his arrest and verbally threatened them. Officers also seized a quantity of marijuana and a knife in the vehicle. While in custody at the detachment, the accused damaged a cell. Jimmy Arias, 29, is charged with uttering threats. possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose possession of a controlled substance, mischief and obstructing a peace officer. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Cornwall court.

Update: Incident ends peacefully

A man has been arrested without incident following a break-in at a Dunvegan home Friday afternoon.
Police were called at about 3 p.m. when the suspect was observed in the residence by an occupant of the home. After containing the area, officers arrested the man at approximately 5:30 p.m.
A section of County Road 34 between Concession 8 (Laggan Road) and County Road 24 which had been closed to traffic has been re-opened.
