High school girls basketball titles to be decided Thursday

The SDGAA 'A' division senior and junior girls champions will be decided Thursday, Nov. 7, on two fronts.

The action is scheduled to tip off at Tagwi SS, at 8:30 a.m., with a junior girls semifinal game between Glengarry and Char-Lan. The other junior semi will take place at 10 a.m., at North Dundas, where the host Devils will take on St. Lawrence. The junior girls final is set for a 12:30 p.m. start, to be hosted by North Dundas.

Tagwi gets the senior semifinals. At 10 a.m., it will be Char-Lan versus Glengarry, followed by the Warriors against North Dundas. The senior 'A' final is booked for a 2 p.m. start.

During the regular season, Tagwi's seniors placed first with 16 points, while North Dundas was best amongst junior squads with 14 points.

Vrbetic backstops Team Canada Black win in U17 hockey

Dunvegan's Joe Vrbetic made 27 saves against the USA to backstop Team Canada Black to a 5-4 victory this afternoon at the World U17 Hockey Challenge in New Brunswick.

The result completes the team's round-robin action with 1 regulation-time win, 1 overtime win, and 1 overtime loss, for six points.

This was Vrbetic's second game at the tournament. He was also between the pipes on Sunday, when his team fell 5-4 in overtime to Team Canada White. On Monday, with Garin Bjorklund in goal, Team Canada Black won in overtime, 3-2, over the Czech Republic.

The Cornwall Wildcats, which feature three Glengarry players, will be playing for the NCAFA tyke football championship, on Saturday, Nov. 4, starting at 9:30 a.m.

The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on YouTube (link here).

Two Alexandria Glens honoured by CCHL2

In announcing the October Performers of the Month in the CCHL2 (Westport player Blake Kettyle, Ottawa West goaltender Miguel Daoust, and Ottawa rookie Noel de Kemp), the league also delivered honourable mentions to a pair of Alexandria Glens.

Mikael Gibault was recognized in the player category, while Mathieu Parent was identified amongst the rookies.

Junior A Colts edge Nepean in Thursday night CCHL hockey

Michal Carr made 20 saves to backstop the Cornwall Colts to a 2-1 victory over the Nepean Raiders, at the Ed Lumley Arena, on Thursday night.

The Colts outshot the Raiders 36-21 to improve to 8-10-3-0, for 19 points, and into a tie for seventh overall in the CCHL standings.

Ethan Mulhearn and Alex Gagnon provided the offence for the Colts. Cedric Matte, acquired last week in the David Poirier trade with Carleton Place, was named the Hardest Working Colts Player of the Game.

Three stars were first Alex Gagnon (COR), second Tristan Poissant (COR), and third William Venne (NEP).

Next game for Cornwann's junior 'A' hockey team is booked for tonight, Nov. 2, in Brockville. Start time is 7:30 p.m.. at the Brockville Memorial Centre.

The Colts return home on Thursday, Nov. 8 to host the Pembroke Lumber Kings, at 7:30 p.m., at the Ed Lumley Arena.

High school boys volleyball playoffs set for next week

SDGAA high school boys volleyball playoffs will take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week, on three fronts.

Monday, Nov. 5 will see the 'AA' playoffs (senior and junior) take place a Holy Trinity.

  • 11 a.m.: senior semifinal St. Joseph's vs. CCVS
  • noon: junior final Holy Trinity vs. St. Joseph's
  • 1:30 p.m.: senior final Holy Trinity vs. semifinal winner

Tuesday's action, at la Citadelle, will feature junior 'A' playoffs action.

  • 10 a.m.: quarter-final Seaway vs. St. Lawrence
  • 11 a.m.: quarter-final Tagwi vs. North Dundas
  • noon: semifinal la Citadelle vs. lowest-seeded quarter-final winner
  • 1 p.m.: semifinal Glengarry vs. highest-seeded quarter-final winner
  • 2:30 p.m.: championship final

And on Wednesday, games will take place in Alexandria, as Glengarry GDHS hosts the senior 'A' playoffs.

  • 10 a.m.: quarter-final la Citadelle vs. Char-Lan
  • 11 a.m.: quarter-final Tagwi vs. North Dundas
  • noon: semifinal Glengarry vs. lowest-seeded quarter-final winner

Senior boys 'A' final standings: 1st Glengarry 27 points, 2nd l'Heritage 21 points, 3rd la Citadelle 18 points, 4th Tagwi 14 points, 5th North Dundas 11 points, 6th Char-Lan 10 points, 7th St. Lawrence 5 points. Top six teams qualify for playoffs, with first-place squad hosting.

Junior boys 'A' final standings: 1st la Citadelle 20 points, 2nd Glengarry 19 points, 3rd Seaway 15 points, 4th Tagwi 12 points, 5th North Dundas 12 points, 6th St. Lawrence 6 points, 7th Char-Lan 4 points. Top six teams qualify for playoffs, with first-place squad hosting.

Senior 'AA' division: Holy Trinity finished first of three teams, with 15 points. St. Joseph's was second (13 points), and CCVS was third (1 point).

Junior 'A' division: St. Joseph's placed first at 12 points, with Holy Trinity second at 8 points.
