Man charged with impersonating soldier

A 47-year-old North Glengarry man has been charged with unlawful use of a military uniform.

Simon De Rothschild was arrested November 2 when Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry OPP officers observed a male in a Canadian military uniform soliciting funds for a charitable organization.

An investigation revealed that the man did not have authorization to wear the uniform.

He was released and scheduled to appear in Alexandria court Dec. 12.

Le Relais senior girls soccer team claims Prescott-Russell league championship

Motorcyclist killed -- Victim identified

A 59-year-old North Glengarry man has been identified as the motorcyclist who was killed in a collision near Dunvegan Tuesday night.

Andrew Chisholm was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

He  was killed in a collision with a passenger vehicle at the intersection of County Roads 20 and 24 near Dunvegan Tuesday at 5:13 p.m.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that a motorcycle was travelling northbound on County Road 20 when, for reasons under investigation, a passenger vehicle travelling southbound turned towards County Road 24 and collided with the northbound motorcycle.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was un-injured.

Canadiens vs Glens alumni hockey game on Oct. 27

Alumni of the Montreal Canadiens will be skating against Alexandria Glens alumni in hockey action on Oct. 27, at the Glengarry Sports Palace, in Alexandria.

The tentative rosters have been announced and can be viewed in this post on Sports in the Glens.

The evening is a fundraiser for the foundation of the Glengarry Memorial Hospital.

200 attend vigil

About 200 people attended a vigil in memory of murder victim Emilie Maheu in Alexandria Wednesday night.

"Do not let her death define her life," urged Natalie St-Denis, one of the organizers of the ceremony.

While mourning the loss of the young mother, speakers also implored the crowd to remember the many other victims of domestic violence.

Every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by a partner or former partner, noted Dr. Suzanne Filion, who helped stage the moving gathering at the Grotto.

Heat detector prompts evacuation

Nobody was injured when a heat detector set off an alarm prompting the evacuation of seniors from the MacDonald Residence on Bertha Street in Vankleek Hill at 8 a.m. October 24.

All residents immediately evacuated the building and were escorted to the Vankleek Hill Community Centre on Mill Street.

A community response was set up to answer the needs of the affected residents. The Social Services and Victim Services of Prescott-Russell attended the Community Centre providing assistance and support to the residents.

The occupants were able to return to the residence at approximately 9:30 a.m., reports the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), which responded to the incident along with Prescott-Russell Paramedic Service and the Champlain Fire Department.
