Soccer is back

The first soccer game of the season took to the pitch at GDHS in Alexandria today, though coaches were quick to point out it was just an exhibition match between Le Relais' Franco girls team and the senior Gaels squad.

In windy, cool conditions on a surprisingly decent field for this time of year, GD prevailed 2-0 over the cross-town girls who are tuning up for next month's Tournoi Franco Ontarien to be held in the Toronto area.

Meanwhile for the Gaels, it is all about getting ready for the SD&G league season which officially gets underway the first week of May.  GD will continue with exhibition action on Monday, playing a pair of games in Williamstown.  The Gaels will take on rival Char-Lan at 12:30 p.m. and CCVS at 2 p.m.  A year ago, the Crusaders knocked off GD in the SD&G championship match to advance to EOSSAA and eventually OFSAA.  Char-Lan's other game on Monday goes at 11 a.m. against CCVS.

The boys are of course at it as well, with both GDHS' and Char-Lan's teams seeing action on Monday in Williamstown.  The Crusaders will play the Raiders at 11 a.m. and the Gaels at 12:30 p.m.  GD's second match will be at 2 p.m. against CCVS.

Later next week, both of GDHS' senior teams will head to Toronto to play in the Brian Filion Memorial Tournament as a final warm-up for league action.

Le Relais will send both its boys and girls teams to the Franco tournament, while the school also awaits EOSSAA. Playing in the Prescott-Russell league last fall, the senior boys, senior girls, and junior boys all won their respective divisions and qualified to advance.
