Warriors eliminate Cornwall Wildcats #3 in spring football playoffs
The United Counties Warriors bantam football team eliminated Cornwall's #3 Wildcats squad on Wednesday night in a playoff opener played on the pristine pitch at Tagwi.
The victory for the Warriors was the second straight against this team, having beaten the Wildcats last Sunday in Cornwall to finish off the regular season.
UC ended up third in the standings with a record of 4 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss, even with Cornwall #2. However, the #2 Wildcats earned the second seed, and a bye through the first playoff round, based on fewer points allowed.
Cornwall #3, meanwhile, had won just once in the regular season, though did have some chances against the Warriors on Wednesday night before UC's defence slammed the door twice stymying Cornwall with goal to go.
UC nonetheless prevailed in the battle with a 22-13 effort and will move on to play Cornwall #2 on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall. During the regular season, the Warriors tied the #2 squad 12-12 in their only meeting.
