Senior Little League Highlanders advance in baseball playoffs
The Glengarry Highlanders senior little league baseball team chalked up two victories in the opening weekend of league playoff action in Cornwall to advance to the next stage of the double-elimination tournament.
In game one, the local boys scored a decisive 11-1 victory over Greely in what Coach Wayne Lapierre called "the best game of the year" for his Highlanders. Andrew Seguin pitched the complete-game win, hurling just 80 pitches in the process that included one four-pitch inning.
Glengarry won its second game when Casselman defaulted, setting the stage for game three against Hawkesbury, a team that finished sixth in the regular season before upsetting top-ranked Rockland last weekend.
The Highlanders who went 8-9-1 during the season for fourth place will take to the field at Legion Park in Cornwall for a noon showdown on Saturday, Aug. 15, against Hawkesbury. The loser of the game will have to play Rockland later that afternoon, while the winner will advance to play on Sunday.
Assistant Coach Randy Larocque says it is his team's defence that stands out and could make the difference. Another bonus heading into the next game, the Highlanders have five eligible pitchers, while four of Hawkesbury's will be ineligible due to the number of pitches they threw last weekend.
