Girls high school basketball season tips off
Holy Trinity and St. Joseph's will be hosting the 3rd Annual Panther / Falcon Classic Senior Girls Basketball Tournament this weekend. For the first time, it will be a 16-team event, up from 12 teams the past two years.
In games of local interest, Holy Trinity is scheduled to play Perth on Friday, Sept. 25 at noon in the Falcons' Nest at Holy Trinity. Char-Lan will follow with a game against Rideau at 1:30 p.m.
Holy Trinity's other games are booked for Friday at 4:30 p.m. against PECI and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against South Grenville. Char-Lan's remaining first-round games will be played at General Vanier against Bayside Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. against KCVI.
The gold-medal final is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity, while the bronze medal match will be played at the same time at St. Joe's.
Falcons play in Kingston tourney
The Falcons went 1-3 at the Taylor Allen Memorial Tournament in Kingston last weekend.
The girls lost 45-35 to Sydenham in the first contest. Brittany DeRochie scored 11. In game 2, HT dropped a 42-19 decision to Holy Cross, with Katherine Lemoine scoring 6. The Falcons then beat Bayridge 32-30 in the third match with Lemoine scoring 12 and Angela Levac scoring 11. Game 4 had Trinity losing by a 53-32 score. Angela Levac led the team with 15 points by going an impressive 11 for 13 from the free throw line.
League play begins
The Falcons open the SD&G regular season when they travel to Seaway on Wednesday to take on the Spartans. Holy Trinity will host OFSAA, the provincial basketball championships, in November.
Other local high schools are also expected to shortly tip off league play, though a full schedule has not yet been released to The News. Stay tuned to our website and the print edition of the newspaper for details through the season.
