The Seaway Valley minor atom 'A' Rapids participated in the Oshawa Cup Tournament 2016, and they came home with gold medals.
The team, coached by Miguel Delisle who was assisted by Scott Butter Thompson, Mark Novosad, and Peter Bowen, went undefeated in round-robin play, beating their opponents by large margins: 15-2, 7-1, 9-1, and 17-0.
SVR’s winning record advanced them to the semifinals where they met the North York Knights. The Knights proved to be a stronger opponent than had been seen in round-robin play. They pressured the Rapids until the third period when SVR made their move, stealing the game from North York 11-6.
The final game of the tournament matched SVR versus league opponent Gloucester Rangers Green. The contest was action-packed as the squads attacked the net with vigour, pressuring both net-minders up to the final seconds.
Coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the Rapids tied the game and then pulled ahead during the beginning of the third period. Even play ensued, and the score was tied again during the last minutes of the match. An SVR goal with just 47 seconds remaining sealed the win for the Rapids. The final score was 6-5.
Over the course of the tournament, the team boasted a whopping 65 goals for and a 2.5 goals against average.
