Boys high school hockey: Char-Lan skates to win & tie, Holy Trinity offence shut down

The boys hockey team from Char-Lan DHS struggled offensively in its game today versus North Dundas, unable to capitalize on its many chances, as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie. Earlier, the Crusaders pounded Tagwi 10-0.

Holy Trinity, meanwhile, failed to score a goal on the day, blanked 5-0 by Seaway and 4-0 by la Citadelle, though it wasn't for wont of trying.

Tagwi's other result was a much closer affair, a 3-2 loss to la Citadelle.

Tagwi girls hockey team scores pair of victories

Tuesday's SDGAA high school girls hockey league tournament in Williamstown saw the Tagwi Warriors score a pair of victories, as the ladies beat Holy Trinity 3-1 and St. Joseph's 3-2. The wins moved the Warriors into a second-place tie with North Dundas and the Panthers.

In other results at the Jan. 8 competition, the Falcons blasted la Citadelle 6-2 to remain atop the standings. Their loss to the Warriors is the lone blemish on the season, which has HT with a 5-1 record.

Char-Lan was humbled 10-4 by la Citadelle and lost a close 3-2 contest with North Dundas. St. Joseph's blanked the Devils 3-0.

Last week, the Cornwall Wildcats football club held three days of skills development sessions for youngsters. The activities were led by local coaches, including Summerstown's Jeremy Pike, who recently completed his university studies and football career at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, and CFL Ottawa RedBlacks active player Dan West.

Tanner Spink honoured as athlete of the week at NY college

Martintown's Tanner Spink, a student-athlete at Oswego State University in New York has been recognized as the school's co-athlete of the week for the week ending January 6.

The second-year forward on the men's hockey team was, according to Oswego States announcement, "instrumental in the Lakers' 6-2 defeat of SUNY Canton on Saturday, helping the Lakers to claim their eighth Oswego State Hockey Classic. The sophomore recorded two power-play goals in the first period, the latter of which, was the game-winner.

Spink also recorded an assist and was named the All-Tournament Most Valuable Player.

On the season, he's played in 13 games and has 7 points.

2019 canoe race date pegged for April 14

The 2019 edition of the Raisin River Canoe Race is scheduled to be held on Sunday, April 14. Online registration for the 30 km run downstream from St. Andrew's to Williamstown is now available here

The event first took place in 1973 and has been held all but one year since.

There are various categories of entry, including recreational, professional, student, and kayaks.

Glens, Rebels back in action Saturday night

Coming off Friday night losses, the county's two junior 'B' hockey teams will be back on the ice Saturday, January 5.

The Alexandria Glens will skate at the Glengarry Sports Palace, hosting the Renfrew Timberwolves at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, the Char-Lan Rebels will play on the road, at Carleton Place.

As well, on Sunday afternoon, the Glens will play in Perth.

Summerstown Trails 2019 opening day postponed

The official opening day for the 2019 season at the Summerstown Trails, scheduled for Sunday, January 6, had been postponed due to the icy conditions in the forest.

However, FOTST board representative Jean-Pierre Tibi tells The News that volunteers are optimistic that snow in the forecast will allow the opening day to be rescheduled. They are aiming for Sunday, January 13, though as of this posting time, this has not been confirmed.

Updates will be posted online and in The Glengarry News, as information becomes available.

Kieran Craig notches first major junior hockey goal for Gatineau Olympiques

Alexandria native and former student-athlete at le Relais Kieran Craig recently garnered his first major junior hockey goal, with the Gatineau Olympiques.

Playing on the road December 30 against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Craig assisted on his team's first tally, in the opening period. In the second stanza, he found the target himself, notching his first career goal at this level of hockey. The Olympiques won the game 3-2.

Craig is a 17-year-old left winger and a rookie in the QMJHL. 

On the season to date, he has 7 points in 32 games. Gatineau sits in fourth place in the Western Conference, with a record of 14-19-2-1.

Reminder: Jr. B Rebels open 2019 with four-game road stint

The new year starts with a four-game road stretch for the CCHL2 Char-Lan Rebels, beginning Friday night in Embrun.

The slate will conclude Jan. 11, in Alexandria, followed by a home game in Williamstown the next night.

Alexandria Glens start 2019 on home ice Friday

The Alexandria Glens of the CCHL2 will open the 2019 portion of their schedule at home, on Friday, January 4, hosting the league-leading Ottawa Jr. Canadians. Game time is set for 8 p.m, at the Glengarry Sports Palace.

Rebels fall short of come-back bid versus CCHL2's top squad

The Char-Lan junior 'B' Rebels made it an exciting game last Saturday night in Williamstown. Down 4-1 in the third period, the boys scored two in quick succession, as Liam MacDonald was rewarded for his gritty physical effort with a power-play marker, followed moments later by a breakaway goal from Brennan Markell.

That was as close as they could get, though, as the league-leading Ottawa Canadians turned up their defensive pressure to hang on and deal the Rebels a 4-3 loss.

Ryan Reifler also scored for Char-Lan, while Dillon Spinner, Sam Ferland, Justice Brownlee, Zach Auger, and Reifler.

In net, Julien Cholette started, playing 7:18 and allowing three goals on five shots. Grant Craig took over and went the rest of the way, giving up one goal on 20 shots.

Junior B Glens end 2018 with decisive win

The Alexandria CCHL2 Glens finished off the 2018 portion of their junior 'B' hockey schedule last Friday night, with a solid victory over the Richmond Royals. The win capped off a successful month, that saw the team garner points in every game, with four victories and one overtime loss.

Nicolas Rousseau backstopped the win, with 41 saves, while Richmond goaltender Eric Tessier was peppered with 52 shots.

Reggy St-Surin scored twice for the Glens, once on a power play and then short-handed. Also striking for goals were Kodiak Whiteduck, Lochlan MacDonald (with the finish as he rushed the net), and Braden Legue (on a blast from the point).

Earning assists in the game were Kole Beaton (2), Samuel Lacroix (2), Nathan Sauve, Mathieu Parent, Joshua Desjardins, and Dylan Stacey.

GSL men's soccer sees McCrimmon, Alexandria win

The 2018 portion of the Glengarry Soccer League's winter indoor schedule concluded last Thursday night in Alexandria, where Alexandria FC trounced Pine Grove 10-4.

Scoring for the winning side were Yale Chadsey and Spencer Lordz, each with a hat trick. Also finding the net were Sullivan Van Loon and Andrew Wilkes, each with two.

Replying the other way were Colin Webster (2), Taegan Hallahan, and Tahir Ekramuzzaman.

The other Dec. 20 match saw McCrimmon prevail 4-1 over the Bar Flies, on the strength of goals from Matthew Cunningham (2), Shawn Vink, and one unidentified. Kenny MacMillan had the lone tally the other way.

The men are on hiatus from action over the Christmas holidays, scheduled to resume play January 10.
