(By Martin Bélanger)     The visit of the Quebec Mod-Lite Series, along with a Modified Dash for Cash, highlights this Sunday night's events at Cornwall Motor Speedway. There will also be a full program, though the Semi-Pro class has the night off.

The Mod-Lite will be in town for their first of two visits as they were also recently added to the schedule for August 3. The series promoter is expecting over 20 cars for this visit, including top drivers from Quebec, such as Rejean Lemieux, Raphael Ferland, Mikael Dion, and more, who will run against Mohawk regulars, such as Mathieu Robinson, Dan and Tim Reif, Dan Desnoyers, and Nick Mallette.

Racing series hit area tracks this weekend

office Jul 9, 2014 - 3:06pm

(By Martin Bélanger)     Both the Seaway-Lussier GM Performance Sportsman and Mohawk Race Parts Pro-Stock Series are back in action this weekend at three different tracks. The Sportsman series will travel to Quebec for a double header, while the Pro-Stock will be at Mohawk International Raceway.

Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond will host round two and three of the Sportsman Series, as both events will be 50-lap races this Friday and Saturday. Defending series champion and initial winner at Brockville, Mathieu Desjardins will look to continue his success in the series. Last year Desjardins had swept both events paving the way for his title. Competition will be tough at both venues as local top runners such as Desjardins, Dany Gagné, Jonathan Desilets, Guy Ouellette, Kaven Poliquin, Martin Pelletier, and several others will defend home turf against some of the best drivers from Eastern Ontario, including Shane Pecore, Joey Ladouceur, Corey Wheeler, and Mike Maresca.

The Pro-Stocks will visit Mohawk for the first time this season in the Mohawk Race Parts Series. Stephane Lemire won the initial event in Cornwall earlier in May. A good field of cars is expected, including regular runners from the Cornwall track, such as Stephane Lebrun, Dave Bissonnette, Jocelyn Roy, George Renaud, Eli Gilbert. The race will also attract drivers from Autodrome Granby in Lemire, Bruno Cyr, Richard Bertrand and others. A field of 20 cars and more is expected for the 40-lap event.

The weekend will feature a lot of action at each venue with good choices for fans on Friday with the Sportsman in Granby and Pro-Stock in Mohawk, and on the following night the Sportsman continue their quest at Drummond. Be sure to support your local series and visit these great speedways.

  • Eastern Ontario Armwrestling Championships: Tonight, the Atlantic Hotel in Alexandria will host this regional competion for men and women. Entries will be accepted on site, starting at 6pm, with the action slated to begin at 8pm. The event is open to any competitors, and specators are welcome.

The Mosquitos will also take to the field in Cornwall, while the peewee and bantam championship games will go in Alexandria.

Speedway schedule for Sunday

office Jun 27, 2014 - 6:05pm

(By Martin Bélanger)     One of the biggest events of the season is on tap for Sunday at Cornwall Motor Speedway, as the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series will be in town for the annual visit. It will also be a very emotional evening in the Mini-Stock feature event.

Cornwall will be round #3 of the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series as Matt Sheppard leads the way in front of defending Series champion Brett Hearn as Billy Decker currently ranks in third spot. Justin Haers, Billy Dunn, Jimmy Phelps, Larry Wight, Mat Williamson, Pete Britten, Danny Johnson and several others will also be at Cornwall as the Series is attracting nearly 20 regulars on the Tour in 2014.

Area drivers such as Carey Terrance, Stephane Lafrance, Chris Raabe, Brian McDonald, Gage Morin and others will try and defend home turf during the 100-lap event paying a cool $6,000 to the winner. We remember last year, a impressive total of 58 cars had attempted to qualify. Along with the Big Block feature, a full program will be presented.

The night will be very emotional in the 12-lap Mini-Stock feature as we will host a small presentation to honour Danny Lefebvre who had a fatal accident at the speedway last Sunday evening.

The night of racing will also include feature events for the Sportsma, Pro-Stock, and Semi-Pro groups.

General admission price will be $28 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 years and over, and $2 for kids under 16. Pits admission will be $38. The pit entrance will be open at 2pm for hauler parking. General admission gates will open at 3pm, with racing starting at 7pm sharp!

A fireworks display will be held to celebrate Canada Day.

River Kings announce booster club for fans

office Jun 27, 2014 - 5:00pm

(By Rodney Wilson)     Since purchasing the River Kings a few short weeks ago, owner Brock Frost has repeatedly sought ways of enhancing the experience and overall interaction that the River Kings fans have with the club.

With this vision in mind, Frost is proud to announce that the Cornwall River Kings will be forming a fan’s Booster Club.

“Hockey teams at all levels of play support the presence of a booster club all with a similar goal of bringing the team and the community closer together,” said Frost. “The Booster Club will help organize and create community events, BBQs, charity auctions, interactive games with the fans, operation of the River Kings Kids Club and anything and everything in between,” he said.

The Booster Club will be registered with the Province of Ontario and will be operated by a 15-member executive board consisting of the owner, the general manager, a player and 12 members of the community, which will be elected at large. Frost encourages all members of the community, and hockey fans alike, to put their name forward for a position on the board.

The first Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 10 a.m. at the Civic Complex, where the group as a whole will elect the team’s first executive board.

If interested in serving on the board, please email Mike Crowder at no later than July 9.

River Kings make player trade

office Jun 25, 2014 - 1:44pm

Here's the latest press release from the LNAH Cornwall River Kings professional hockey team...

General manager Mitch Gagne continues to tinker with the River Kings lineup. Gagne shipped veteran forward Dominic Chiasson to the Thetford-Mines Isothermic on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of draft picks. Cornwall receives Thetford’s 8th and a 9th round picks in 2015.

“The league has reduced the salary cap and I have a budget to work with,” said Gagne. With a growing number of young forwards competing for roster spots, the 37-year-old became expendable.

“We pick up two draft picks which help us with the CHL Junior/Ontario rule and our plans for the future,” said Gagne.

Chiasson, a 10-year veteran of the LNAH, had 15 goals and 17 assists in 38 games for Cornwall last season. There were other teams interested in the veteran, but ultimately Gagne decided on Thethford-Mines, where Chiasson's girlfriend is from.

“That did come into play,” said Gagne. “We wish nothing but the best for the successful veteran.”
