Three county hockey players compete in NHL training camps

sean Sep 19, 2016 - 6:39pm

By Scott Carmichael (News Staff)

Three local hockey players – Remi Elie of Green Valley, and the Spink twins, Tylor and Tyson of Williamstown – participated in rookie camps for the NHL’s Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators, respectively, which wrapped up recently.

Elie, a 21-year-old left winger who played for Dallas’ top farm club – the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL) – last season, attended the parent club’s main pre-season training camp in both 2014 and 2015 and was among the team’s final roster cuts last year.

The Stars’ second-round pick, 40th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Dallas in September 2014 and will attend the team’s main training camp.

For the Spink brothers, it was their second experience in a professional hockey camp. Both were invited to the Detroit Red Wings development camp in July 2014.

Upon graduating from Colgate University and the varsity Raiders hockey team this past spring, the 23-year-old forwards and linemates joined the Toledo Walleyes of the East Coast Hockey League on amateur tryout (ATO) agreements. Tylor later agreed to an ATO with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, going scoreless in two games.

The twins attended the Nashville rookie camp on a tryout basis, attempting to procure professional contracts.

All three local players also participated in NHL rookie tournaments.

Elie and his fellow Dallas rookie teammates competed against their counterparts from the host Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues, in the Traverse City Prospect Tournament (September 16 to 20).

The Spink brothers, and their freshman Predator teammates played in a competition (also from September 16 to 20) in Coral Springs, Fla. for rookies from the host Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals.

The Glengarry News will provide an update on the status of Glengarry’s trio of hockey prospects, upon completion of training camp and the beginning of the regular season, early next month.
