The Family Day weekend is jam-packed with sports-related activities, both for participation and spectating.
Tonight, Feb. 16, the Alexandria Glens junior 'B' hockey team hosts the Athens Aeros at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria.
Saturday has the Hockey with Heart tournament taking place in Williamstown, at the outdoor rink. Matches run throughout the day, starting at 8 a.m. This event, at Paul Rozon Memorial Park, is a fundraiser for the Julie MacLachlan Charitable Foundation and Project Silent Night. There's also a bar, food, raffle, prizes, and live entertainment. Spectators are welcome to come out and support the cause.
Saturday night, at 8 p.m., the Char-Lan junior 'B' Rebels host the Richmond Royals at the Char-Lan Rec. Centre, in Williamstown.
Sunday, at Island Park in Alexandria, Mill Pond will host the Beaver Swamp hockey tournament, which supports local minor hockey. Gameplay begins at 8 a.m., continuing through to late afternoon when champions will be crowned.
Also on Sunday, at 2 p.m., the Polar Bear Dip in support of the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame takes place on Mill Pond. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on the brave dippers.
Monday's schedule in Alexandria includes activities at the dome (bubble soccer at 11 a.m., youth flag football at 2 p.m., and free access to the track), Sports Palace (free skating at 9 a.m. and again at 2 p,m., shinny at noon), and snowshoeing on the Glengarry Trails. In Maxville, there's shinny scheduled for 10 a.m. and free skating at 1 p.m.
Also on Monday, the Summerstown Trails will host its annual Family Day program, with volunteers on hand from 10 a.m. onwards. Free equipment rentals, subject to availability, and food will be available. Activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
On Sunday, Feb. 18, Alexandria's Mill Pond will host a pair of events: the Beaver Swamp Hockey Tournament (which supports raises funds to help local youngsters participate in minor hockey) and the Polar Bear Dip (which supports the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame).
This week's edition of The Glengarry News features details on the dip, including a list of registered participants to date. Start time is set for 2 p.m. sharp.
For the Beaver Swamp tourney, this location is a new one this year. Games are scheduled to run throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m., with play taking place on a pair of "rinks." Championship games will likely hit the ice by mid to late afternoon.
Organizer Richard Bellefeuille tells The News that the ice is looking good and he's hoping that Mother Nature will co-operate on Sunday.
The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) invites area residents and families to come out to the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at the Summerstown Forest on Family Day, Monday, February 20, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“Last year’s event, which attracted more than 200 participants was a great success,” says Paul Couture, FOTST President. “Many families came out to the trails for the first time to try out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.”
Once again, the group will organize special activities as their way of supporting today’s busy families. There will be no cost to participate in any of the activities.
In addition to coming out to explore the 18 km of cross-country ski trails and 9 km of snowshoe trails, the following special activities will be offered: fun snowshoe races for kids, guided tours, free hot dogs, marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Also, families will be able to rent ski and snowshoe equipment free of charge throughout the day.
The trails are situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401.
