Video: Poirier scores for Canada in Russia

Two hockey players from the county are competing with a CCHL all-star team, the Ottawa Capitals, at an international club tournament in Russia.

One of them is Green Valley's David Poirier, who is featured in the video embedded below, while the other is Ben Dirven. Both are defenceman who play their league games with the Cornwall Colts. The Caps went on to win this game 6-3 over a squad from Finland. Poirier notched a goal, and Dirven picked up an assist in the contest. The win improved the squad's record to 1-1, with game three booked for Thursday versus a Chinese club.

Local hockey players in Russia this week

A group of local hockey players representing the CCHL includes two county boys, David Poirier and Ben Dirven. The squad, billed as the Ottawa Capitals, is competing at the Junior Club Sirius World Cup, in Russia, this week.

Their first day there was Monday (Aug. 13), and you can read about the experience for the boys in the league's online blog here.

The all-star team, which draws players and staff from the area's junior 'A' league, was invited by Hockey Canada to represent the county in this competition.

CCHL Colts advance to second playoff round

The Cornwall junior 'A' Colts advance to the CCHL semifinals, after a 5-3 win over Smiths Falls Thursday night at the Ed Lumley Arena that saw the boys take the first-round series four games to one.

Brennan Markell scored twice to pace the Colts' offence. Dean Derouchie and Konnor MacCormick each had a goal and an assist. Grant Cooper scored into an empty net to seal the victory. Tristan Conrad and Sebastian Dirven each chipped in with two assists. 

Hunter Garlasco, Hayden Hart, and Kyle Dowdall scored for the Bears.

The Colts outshot the Bears 36-31, with Liam Lascelle backstopping the victory.

Three Stars of the Game were First Star Brennan Markell (COR), Second Star Dean Derouchie (COR), and Third Star Hunter Garlasco (SF).

The Colts must now wait to find out who they’ll play in the CCHL semifinal series.

Ottawa defeated Brockville 2-1 Thursday to win their series 4-1. Carleton Place leads Nepean three-games-to-one, while Kemptville and Hawkesbury are tied 2-2.

Regardless of their opponent, the Colts will begin the next round at home on Thursday, March 30.  Game time is 7:30pm at the Ed Lumley Arena in Cornwall Civic Complex.

Second straight game sees county boy score game-winner for Colts

For the second time in as many games, a county boy scored the game-winning tally for the Cornwall Colts, who now find themselves leading their opening-round CCHL playoff series two games to none over the Smiths Falls Bears.

On the road Friday night, double overtime was needed to decide matters, with Ethan Mulhearn scoring 7:59 in to end the marathon and hand the Colts a 4-3 victory.

The win came 24 hours after Sebastian Dirven scored in OT on home ice in Cornwall, for the game-one victory. (See this post for more.)

The road match also saw Konnor MacCormick and Brennan Markell each score their second goal in as many games for the Colts, while Nick Lalonde notched his first of the post-season.

William Searle scored twice to pace the Bears.  Ryan Gibson also found the net.

The Bears outshot the Colts 44-40.  Liam Lascelle made 41 saves to earn the victory in goal.

The two teams return to Cornwall for game 3 in the best-of-seven series Sunday evening.  Game time is 7pm at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

The fourth match is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30pm, in Smiths Falls.

Dirven notches OT winner for junior 'A' Colts in playoff opener

Bainsville's Sebastian Dirven found the target, just 1:15 into overtime last night, to notch a 4-3 playoff victory for the CCHL Cornwall Colts.

The March 16 contest in Cornwall was the team's post-season opener of a best-of-seven series against the Smiths Falls Bears.

Tanner Spink and Nick Lalonde set up the game-winning tally.

The Bears had forced overtime with a late third-period goal, after Christopher Mammas had given the Colts a 3-2 lead. Konnor MacCormick and Brennan Markell also scored for the Colts.

Cornwall outshot Smiths Falls 36-20, with Liam Lascelle picking up the goaltending victory.

Game two goes tonight in Smiths Falls. Game time is 7:30 at the Smiths Falls Arena.

The Colts and Bears return to Cornwall for game 3 on Sunday evening. Game time is 7pm at the Ed Lumley Arena in Cornwall Civic Complex.

Dirven named U18 HEO defenceman of the month

Bainsville's Benjamin Dirven, a member of the Cornwall U18 Colts, has been named defenceman of the month for February.

The 2000-born blueliner led with a points per game rating of 1.25, off 3 goals and 10 points over eight games. That stretch saw the Colts go 4-3-0-1.

In 45 games this season, the 6 ft. 1in., 178 lb. left-handed blueliner scored 11 times and totalled 34 points, good enough for third overall amongst all league defenders. Dirven continues to put more and more together adding to his already solid toolset  He improved by a total of 10 goals and 29 points in only two more games this season compared to last, when he scored 1 goal and 5 points in 43 games. 

Junior 'A' Colts win 8th straight game, goalie Lascelle named player of week

Colts captain Grant Cooper had a three-point night to lead Cornwall to a 6-4 win over Nepean at the Ed Lumley Arena in Thursday night CCHL hockey action. The victory extends the Colts' winning streak to eight games.

Cooper added two assists to go along with his team-leading 20th goal of the season, as the Colts improve to 25-12-1-3 for 54 points and third overall in league standings.

Alexander Montelone scored his first goal as a Colt and added an assist.  Dean Derouchie (13th of the season), Keegan Mulhearn (5), Shawn Baird (4), and JD Pogue (12) also found the back of the net for the Cornwall squad.

The Raiders outshot the Colts 36-33, with Liam Lascelle picking up the win in goal.

Three stars were First Star Montelone (COR), Second Star Henry McKinney (NEP), and Third Star Noah Konink (COR).

The Colts look to extend their winning streak on Sunday afternoon at home, against the Kanata Lasers.  Colts stars Nick Lalonde and Sebastian Dirven, who played for Team Canada East at the World Jr A Challenge, will be signing autographs and meeting fans after the game.  The puck drops at 3pm at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

Goaltender Lascelle named CCHL player of the week

Colts netminder Liam Lascelle has been named the CCHL Player of the Week. The Colts goalie stopped 78 of 79 shots fired his way, backstopping his team to back-to-back victories over Hawkesbury and Brockville.

Lascelle has been in goal during the Colts' winning streak, posting a sparkling .952 save percentage through the first seven games. Overall this season, Lascelle is 17-9-0-2 with three shutouts, a 2.38 goals against average, and a .923 save percentage.

Dirven and Team Canda East to skate for gold

Colts stars Nick Lalonde and Sebastian Dirven (from Bainsville) could be in your living room this Saturday night, as Team Canada East plays the United States in the Gold Medal game at the World Jr.A Challenge.

The game will be televised live from Bonnyville, Alberta on TSN 1 and TSN 3 Saturday night, starting at 7pm (Eastern Standard Time).

The US best Team Canada East 3-1 in round-robin play on Tuesday. Lalonde assisted on the lone Canada East goal. Canada East beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in overtime to advance to the Gold Medal game. The United States doubled Russia 4-2 to stamp their ticket to the final game.

Lalonde and Dirven have been out of the Colts line-up for the past two weeks since earning their roster spots on Team Canada East earlier this month. Both players will return to Cornwall next week.

Bainsville defenceman skates at World Junior A Challenge

Sebastian Dirven of Bainsville, a student at Char-Lan DHS and member of the Cornwall Colts of the CCHL, is currently in Alberta, skating with Team Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge hockey tournament. 

Dirven is one of two members of the Colts named to Team Canada East, the other being Nick Lalonde.

Lalonde and Dirven are two of 11 Central Canadian Junior Hockey League players chosen for Team Canada East’s 22 player roster.

“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to play against some tough competition,” says Lalonde who has 16 goals, 28 assists and 44 points so far this season.

“It’ll fun to compete against players from other countries,” adds Dirven, who has looked impressive on the Colts blue line.  He has 4 goals, 11 assists for 15 points this season.

This year’s WJAC runs December 11-17, and we will post regular updates to our website. As well, look for a story about Dirven in an upcoming edition of The Glengarry News

Lalonde and Dirven will miss the Colts next three regular-season games while they wear the Canadian colours.

Junior 'A' Colts chop the Lumber Kings

The Colts built a 3-0 lead and staved off a third-period charge from Pembroke to beat the Lumber Kings 4-3 at the Ed Lumley Arena last night.

Tristan Conrad’s second goal of the season with 1:49 left to play in the third period was the game-winner. Christopher Mammas (with his 5th of the season), Brennan Markell (4), and Sebastian Dirven (4) also scored for the Colts, who improve to 15-9-0-3 for 33 points and 6th overall in the CCHL standings. Tanner Spink chipped in with 2 assists.

The Colts outshot the Lumber Kings 41-26 with Liam Lascelle picking up the victory in goal. The three stars were Sebastian Dirven (COR), Tanner Spink (COR), and Salim Mahi-Beaudry (PEM).

The Colts only trail first place Carleton Place by 5 points heading into weekend action. Cornwall travels to Smiths Falls to take on the Bears tonight. Game time is 7:30pm. The team will return home next Thursday (November 25) to host the CCHL-leading Carleton Place Canadians. Game time is 7:30pm at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

Members of the Colts will be involved in upcoming community events in Cornwall. The boys will be participants in the Santa Claus Parade on Saturday.
Colts stars are teaming with the Cornwall Lions Club and the Benson Group and will be handing a game ticket to all children 12 years old and under along the parade route. The ticket will be good for any of the four Colts home games in December.
