401 snarls

Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SD&G) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are currently at the scene of a construction issue at Highway 401 mile marker 781 in South Stormont Township. Construction crews are currently working on an issue with the bridge at Highway 401 and Avonmore Road.

A section of Highway 401 (westbound lanes only), between Brookdale Avenue (Cornwall) and Moulinette Road is closed to traffic with indicated Emergency Detour Routes (EDR) in place onto County Road 2. Highway 401 westbound at Power Dam is also closed to traffic.

Due to construction in the Village of Long Sault motorists should expect long delays and the closure will remain in place for several hours.

401 bridge work

Replacement of two 1960s-era Highway 401 bridges in South Glengarry will take place between 2018 and 2020.

“Bainsville (Third Line) Road, we’re proposing for Year 1 and 2, so 2018 and 2019, and then Westley (Second Line) Road will follow in 2019 and 2020,” Nathan Bakker, project manager at engineering and consulting firm WSP, told council during a presentation at the September 18 regular meeting.

Victim identified in fatal crash on 401

A 32-year-old Rivière Beaudette woman was killed in a six-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in South Glengarry Monday.

Kimberly Oosting was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred in the westbound 401 near the Ontario-Québec border at about 2:30 p.m.

She was driving one of four passenger vehicles that were involved with two tractor trailers in the accident.

The Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Provincial Police detachment says the investigation has indicated that a westbound tractor trailer collided with a westbound passenger vehicle, which then collided with several other vehicles.

Five other people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A section of Highway 401 was closed to traffic, but has since been re-opened.
