Tier 2 men's soccer final series set to kick off on Aug. 27

The Glengarry Soccer League's tier 2 men's division championship series is scheduled to kick off on Monday, Aug. 27 on the main field at Char-Lan District High School, where the unbeaten Celtics will tangle with McCrimmon. Start time is set for 8:30 p.m.

Game two will be played a week later on the pitch at Lochiel, and should a third match be needed, it will go back at Char-Lan on Sept. 6.

Semifinal play saw both teams sweep their opponents.

The Celtics got past Glen Nevis 4-3 (Tristian Derouchie, Shawn Montroy, Andre Sauve, and Alex Lillois scoring for the winning side, while Jason Van den Oetelaar with two and Hubert Gauthier had the replies) and 5-2, while McCrimmon beat Greenfield 5-3 and 7-0.

Laggan lasses face must-win tonight in GSL finals

On their home pitch at Lochiel, the Laggan senior women's soccer team faces a must-win situation tonight to extend their season, while Dunvegan can clinch the 2018 Glengarry Soccer League championship with a win.

Dunvegan won the series opener Tuesday night, 3-0.

Men's GSL finals on hold until next week

There will be no action in the GSL senior men's division this week, as the final series is on hold until next week. We have details in The Glengarry News, along with a round-up of the semifinals.

Minor playoffs in the GSL are underway, Maxville wins U19 girls title

On Monday evening, Team Maxville claimed the U19 girls championship, beating Greenfield.

Playoff action in other divisions continues nightly through the next two weeks.

The Glengarry News will provide coverage in a future edition, including an announcement of individual player award winners.

Local hockey players in Russia this week

A group of local hockey players representing the CCHL includes two county boys, David Poirier and Ben Dirven. The squad, billed as the Ottawa Capitals, is competing at the Junior Club Sirius World Cup, in Russia, this week.

Their first day there was Monday (Aug. 13), and you can read about the experience for the boys in the league's online blog here.

The all-star team, which draws players and staff from the area's junior 'A' league, was invited by Hockey Canada to represent the county in this competition.
