Speedway hosts fireball enduro

(By Martin Bélanger)  The Cornwall Motor Speedway presented the 25th edition of the Fireball Enduro last Sunday.  It was an afternoon with great action that included 50-lap races for ladies 4-cylinder, 4-cylinder men's, 6 cylinder, and 8 cylinder vehicles. This event is always a crowd please as the stands were full with nearly 300 cars in the pits.

The afternoon started with the ladies 50-lap event. A field of 38 cars began the 50-lap race. Jodi Pynenburg finished on top with close to 20 cars being able to cross the line.

The men's 6 cylinders took the track next with 64 cars taking the initial green in the 50-lapper. Michael Duval won the race with more than 20 cars able to complete the race.

A total of 75 cars took the green in the 4-cylinder feature race, though a big pileup in turn 1 after only a few laps were in the books dramatically reduced the field. Cars were stopped all around the track which made for a challenging race eventually won by Matthew Pynenburg.

Up next, the 8 cylinders were on the track as 53 cars took the green in the 50-lap race. These drivers got up to some high speeds around the halfway point, and it was another entertaining event that saw Luke Marti take the checkered flag.

The last event of the day was a second 50-lap 4 cylinder race with 70 cars taking the initial start. Matthew Pynenburg had a perfect day in this category, winning his second race.

Word from the gridiron

Due to space constraints, we weren't able to include a full round-up of football coverage in this week's edition of The Glengarry News.  However, the paper does have a couple of community football action photos, along with details on the high school season which kicks off this week.

Community Football

(By Yvette Delorme)  What a nail-biter it was last weekend for the Peewee Wildcats who in no uncertain terms are making the league feel their presence. The Cats  defeated the Canterbury Mustangs 42-39  in a very hard-hitting and energy-consuming game. The boys well earned the right to brag about their standing in the league, as the squad has 3 wins to go with 0 losses.  The big runner on the day was #23 running back Kaelan Leroux who burned the field, running it into the endzone for 6 touchdowns and kicking for 6 more points. You could here the cheer of the the Cornwall and area fans as the game came to an end. The players were ecstatic; they have turned into a well-oiled machine, and the other teams will take a second look when the Cornwall Wildcats Peewees takes to the field
again. Next game: Sunday, September 18 at  1 pm, Leitrum Field, versus the Gloucester South Raiders.

Other Wildcats results: Bantam Wildcats 35 vs Caterbury Mustangs 0, Mosquito Mustangs 36 vs Wildcats 8.

Wildcats records: bantam 2-1, peewee 3-0, mosquito 0-3.

In the St. Lazare program, the Peewee AAA Stallions emerged with a 22-22 tie against the Ile Bizard Vikings after seeing a first-half 22-6 lead evaporate by the start of the fourth quarter. In the final frame, both defences had their chance to shine. The Stallions killed a Vikings' drive at their own 20-yard line. The offence then marched the ball downfield, but was stopped before getting into field goal range.

Other Stallions notes: midgets go to 4-0 with a 28-21 win over the Richeliey Pirates, bantams move to a 3-2 record with a 76-36 barn burner of a victory over the Ile Perot Patriotes.

Peewee Wildcats prevail

(By Yvette Delorme)

What a fantastic start; a statement has been made by the Cornwall Peewee Wildcats. The squad roared to victory on Monday, starting the season with 2 wins, 0 losses.

Hurricane Irene reared her ugly head on August 28th, but that did not dampen the spirit or the energy of the local team. The game ended in a win for Cornwall.

Monday’s contest was an exciting one from start to finish. The Cats handed the Cumberland Panthers a defeat, scoring a 29-0 shutout victory.  Reeves Nicholson, Jonathan Delorme, Kaelan Leroux, and Andrew Pomeranz all ran the ball into the end zone for a TD each. Rounding out the scoring was kicker Kaelan Leroux who added 5 more points

MVP’s: D-Line Zach Mann, O-Line Jacob Loucks.
