The Canadian Nationals 125 is up next at Cornwall Motor Speedway
Submitted by sean on 28 July 2010 - 12:20pmCornwall, Ont – Tuesday July 27, 2010 – Martin Bélanger – The Cornwall Motor Speedway will host of his biggest event of the year this Sunday with the last race of the Canadian Nationals Mini-Series for the Modified plus a complete show in Sportsman, Pro-Stock and Mini-Stock on Pennzoil and Jiffy Auto Service Night.
The Canadian Nationals will bring a lot of hype and action with a unique 125-lap feature race format with the winner leaving Cornwall with $5,000 in his pocket and will also be qualified for Syracuse. The first 75 laps will be on green flag conditions with a 10-minute break with cars parked on the front stretch and race teams will be able to work on the cars during that time. The yellow flags will count for the remainder of the race, with the last 2 laps of the feature that are needed to be on green conditions. This format will allow fans to see the teams work on their cars and see what kind of strategy they will use for the second part of the race.
The first race of the series was completed on May 23rd with Brett Hearn winning the race in front of Clément Therrien and Carey Terrance. The 34 drivers that attended the first race will be eligible in $13,000 in money and prizes if they are present at the second race. A draw for the Bicknell Chassis will occur during the intermission along with a VP Race Fuel drum that will also be part of the draw.
At the end of the 2-race series, a champion will be crowned and receive a nice cheque of $3,000 along with the coveted title of Canadian National Champion. A quality field is expected with drivers from Quebec, Ontario and United-States already confirmed for Sunday.
The Sportsman, Pro-Stock and Mini-Stock classes are also on this exciting racing card and will bring a lot of excitement during the evening. The pit gates are scheduled to open at 3:30pm with admission costs at $40,00, the general admission will open at 4pm and people will have to pay $28,00 for adult admission and 20$ for students and seniors with children 12 years old and under admitted for free. Varsity Wildcats close season on Saturday
Submitted by sean on 23 July 2010 - 4:02pmThe Varsity Wildcats football team will close out its inaugural season at home Saturday afternoon, hosting the Ottawa-Myers Riders. Game time is 4 p.m. at Joe St. Denis Field.
This is highly exciting football that features athletes who will play senior high school football in the fall and some who will suit up for university squads.
Glengarry is also well represented on the roster.
Wrestling event coming to Cornwall on July 31

The event, entitled "Damage Control" will feature former WWE Superstar, the master prankster himself, Doink The Clown. Ontario DIRT Late Models Series in action this Sunday at Cornwall Motor Speedway
Submitted by sean on 23 July 2010 - 2:54pmThe Ontario DIRT Late Model Series will be in action at Cornwall Motor Speedway with the completion of the 3-race weekend that included Autodrome Edelweiss and Brockville Ontario Speedway. The Modified, Pro-Stock, Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock will also see action on Jim’s Performance Night.
Race fans will be treated this Sunday with a good field of cars confirmed to compete for the last event of the weekend. Peter Mantha, from Gatineau will lead the way will a World Of Outlaws Late Model car from the Chub Frank Racing Team. Mantha had some success during the recent Great Northern Tour with a 12th place finish at Can-Am in June. Greg Oakes from Franklinville, New York, winner last year at Edelweiss and current champion of the ODLM Series for the last 2 years will be there to defend his title. Eleven of the top 12 in the 2009 series points will be in action with John Lobb, Adam West and Jeff Dayman that finished in the top 5 last year. Regular drivers from Brighton Speedway with 4 of the 5 top drivers from that new Late Models Series in 2010 making the haul, point`s leader Charlie Sandercock, Phil Potts, Caley Weese and Jason McCrory will be in the pits. Other drivers that will compete for the win are 2009 Stateline Speedway Champ, Chad Valone from Warren, Pennsylvania and veteran Modified driver and current point`s leader in the Pro Late Model class in Can-Am Speedway, Lee Gill will also be here. Other American drivers like David Scott from Garland, Pennsylvania and Dave Hartman from Howard City, Michigan will have the long drive to race during the weekend.
More than $13,500 in purse will be given out during the 30-lap feature race with the winner getting $2,000 for the win. Each car that will take part in the A-Main will at least leave the speedway with $400 in their pockets. Expect to see some 2 and 3-wide racing around the track all feature long.
Along with the Late Models, the Modified, Pro-Stock, Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock will also see some action with regular events in each class. With still a lot of racing to do, these nights are really important to accumulate precious points towards track championship. The MrDIRTcar Big Block Series hits Cornwall Motor Speedway this Sunday Night
Submitted by sean on 8 July 2010 - 10:30amThe MrDIRTcar Big Block Tour will hit Cornwall Motor Speedway this Sunday, July 11 with the presentation of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino International 100 which will be event #8 in the Super DIRTcar Series that travels across Canada and United-States. A complete race program of Pro-Stock, Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock will complete the schedule with no Sportsman.
Current Super DIRTcar Series points leader, Billy Decker will lead the way with several other superstars like Matt Sheppard, last year`s event winner, Jimmy Phelps, Danny Johnson, Brett Hearn, Dale Planck, Billy Dunn, Michael Storms, Ryan Phelps, Tom Sears,Jr, Rich Scagliotta and others will invade Cornwall to compete against local stars such as points leader Laurent Ladouceur, brothers Danny and Tim O’Brien, young guns Luke Whitteker, Kyle Dingwall, Gage Morin and Matt Billings, Carey Terrance, Dave Heaslip, Joel Doiron and others will try to defend home turf during 100 laps around the Cornwall bullring and try to win the coveted title and $6,000 included with the winner’s trophy.
The always competitive Pro-Stock category will have some action in a 20-lap feature race with the Semi-Pro with 15 laps and Mini-Stock with a dozen will complete the racing card. The Sportsman will have a night off.
The pit gates will open at 3:30pm with general admission opening at 4pm. Time Trials are scheduled for 5:30pm with the first heat to start at 6pm. Kids can golf for free until July 11
Submitted by sean on 8 July 2010 - 10:20amSeveral local golf courses, including Glengarry (Alexandria), Summerheights (Cornwall), Upper Canada (Morrisburg), and Casselman are participating in "Take a Kid to the Course Week."
This program is designed to encourage families and juniors to take up the game of golf.
One youth under 16 is free with a paying adult, and there is even an online contest where someone will win a trip to Florida.

Football action this weekend
Submitted by sean on 24 June 2010 - 1:07pmFriday night, the Maxville Fair will host a pair of youth football games to showcase the heritage of the sport locally. Games will kick off at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
Spring league finals
Sunday, June 27 will see the spring football league finals take to the field. The schedule is as follows:
- 10 a.m. in Russell: Russell #1 vs Cornwall #2, mosquito division final
- 1 p.m. in Cornwall: Cornwall #1 vs Cornwall #2, peewee division final
- 3 p.m. in Cornwall: Cornwall #2 vs Cornwall #3, tyke division final
- 5 p.m. in Cornwall: Cornwall #1 vs Cornwall #3, bantam final
Soccer, football, and more this weekend

On Saturday, Alexandria hosts an adult soccer tournament fundraiser, while Maxville hosts the GSL's Gerald MacDonald soccer tournament for U8 and U10 players.
Also on Saturday, the Varsity Wildcats football team will play its second home contest, set to kickoff at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, it will be more football as the Glengarry Gaels peewee team is slated to play a semifinal game against Cornwall #2 at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall at 11 a.m.
Sunday night, the action moves to the track, with the Cornwall Motor Speedway set to host a full schedule that includes the World of Outlaws.
Senior lacrosse to be played in Alexandria Saturday night
Submitted by sean on 4 June 2010 - 6:21pmThe arena in Alexandria will host a special senior league lacrosse game Saturday night (June 5) featuring the Akwesasne-based Snake Island Muskies versus the Kahnawake Mohawks. Game time is 8 p.m.
This is an official league match relocated to here due to the unavailability of the Muskies' home arena in Massena.
Aside from league points, there will be plenty more on the line between these teams, including pride and the historic rivalry between these native communities.
An entertaining show is promised.
Massive youth lacrosse tourney to descend on region
Submitted by sean on 1 June 2010 - 3:44pmThe area will host a large youth lacrosse tournament with games booked for the Char-Lan arena in Williamstown, Long Sault arena, and the Bob Turner and Si Miller arenas in Cornwall.
Games begin Friday evening at 6 p.m. and will run through 11 p.m. The action then resumes on Saturday with matches from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and continue 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
There are local teams, as Cornwall squads include Glengarry players, as well as groups from as far as New Brunswick involved. Levels of play range from novice through intermediate.
Provincial football league kicks off locally on Saturday
Submitted by sean on 28 May 2010 - 5:24pmThe local entry in the OVFL, the Cornwall Wildcats, will take to the field on Saturday afternoon for their first crack at provincial-level varsity football.
Opening kickoff is booked for 3:30 p.m. when the Wildcats will square off against the York-Simcoe Storm Raiders.
Our local teams draws players from across the united counties, including a strong contingent from Glengarry. Among the latter are Spencer Meldrum, Kevin Aleinik, David Suter, David Pilon, Michael Helmer, Kacey Basalle, Brandon Picken, Jordan Wurah, and Alex Labonte.
High school baseball all-star game booked for Thursday
Submitted by sportseditor on 19 May 2010 - 12:22pmTop baseball athletes will take to the diamond Thursday, May 20 at Legion Field in Cornwall for the SD&G all-star game. The game format will see a team of assembled all-stars take on the SD&G champs, St. Joseph's.
Doubleheader game action is booked for 1 and 3:30 p.m. with a homerun hitting contest set for 3 p.m.

Men's twilight golf looking for players
Submitted by sean on 4 May 2010 - 2:10pmThe Glengarry men's twilight golf league has scheduled sign-up nights for May 10 and 12 in the clubhouse at the Glengarry Golf and Country Club in Alexandria. Registrations will be taken from 5 to 7 p.m. each night at a cost of $30. Alternately, anyone interested can sign up at other times in the pro shop. League play is slated to begin May 19.
Football week one standings
Submitted by sean on 4 May 2010 - 2:07pmThe Glengarry Gaels peewee football team tops the standings after the first week of play, leading in both points scored and fewest points allowed with a win against the United Counties Warriors.
Other week-one peewee winners were Cornwall #1 and Russell #1, while Cornwall #2 and Russell #2 lost.
Bantams: United Counties lost 22-0 to Cornwall #1, Cornwall #2 beat Cornwall #3 with a 6-0 effort, and Russell #1 topped Russell #2 by a 14-0 margin.
Mosquitos: The winner was Russell #1 which beat Russell #2. The other contest saw Cornwall #1 and Cornwall #2 tie at 7-7.
Tykes: Winners were Cornwall #2 and Cornwall #3, and losers were Cornwall #1 and Cornwall #4. The two Russell teams tied.
Glengarrians head to Boston Marathon

North Lancaster's Glen Campbell, a teacher at GDHS, will run the 114-year-old race for the second time, while fellow GD teacher Robin Waller, from Moose Creek, will also be there. From the south, two Summerstown area residents, Christian Belair and Caroline Samson, have qualified and will be competing in Boston.

Canoe race cancelled

Submitted by sportseditor on 11 April 2010 - 12:18pmLast night in Ottawa, the Junior B hockey season came to an end for the Glens as the boys lost to the Junior Canadians 4-1 in game five of the championship series.
This marks the second straight year the team has been a finalist after winning the championship the two previous seasons.
Glens stave off elimination
Submitted by sportseditor on 10 April 2010 - 12:15pmThe Glens were on the brink on home ice last night in Alexandria, trailing 3-0 in the EOJHL championship series, when they staved off elimination with a 5-4 win in double overtime.
Tonight the boys travel to Ottawa in another do-or-die battle, and should the Glens prevail, there will be a game six back in Alexandria on Monday night.
