Julien sets up another goal for Canada

Playing against the Netherlands today at the Cyprus Cup, Williamstown's Christina Julien set up Team Canada Captain Christine Sinclair for a marker 15 minutes into the match as Canada topped the Dutch side 2-1.

The Glengarry 20-year-old has figured into the scoring in both games for Canada so far, having scored a goal in game one on March 5 against New Zealand, a contest that finished up as a 1-1 draw.

Next up for Julien is a March 10 collision against Russia with a berth in the March 12 final on the line.  Canada is the defending champion.  For the Glengarrian, this tournament marks her first foray into the international soccer arena.

Rebels draw first blood in Battle of Glengarry

The St. Lawrence Division finals opened in Alexandria Friday night with the visiting Char-Lan Rebels drawing first blood to sting the Alexandria Glens 3-2.

Game two goes Saturday night in Williamstown with a 7:45 p.m. puck drop.

Register for minor sports this weekend

The Char-Lan arena in Williamstown will hold registrations on Saturday, March 7, for Char-Lan Minor Soccer, minor ball hockey, and three-pitch.  Call 613-347-2411 for more information.

The Glengarry Soccer League is holding registrations for all minor divisions, co-ed through U19, on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria, the Char-Lan Rec Centre in Williamstown, the Dunvegan Recreation Centre, Laggan Public School, the North Lancaster Optimist Hall, the Maxville Sports Complex, and the Vankleek Hill Community Centre.  On Monday evening, registrations continue in Vankleek Hill at at Le Relais in Alexandria.  For further details, check the GSL website at www.glengarrysoccer.com

The Cornwall Wildcats Minor Football Association is also accepting registrations this weekend, with volunteers on hand at the Bob Turner Arena in Cornwall on Friday, March 6, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. and again Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The spring football program fields teams for kids aged 7 through 16, and new this year, a midget team for players aged 19 and under.  Check their website at cornwallwildcats.ca for more info.

Glengarry soccer player scores first international goal

Playing for the Canadian national women's soccer team, Christina Julien of Williamstown scored her first international goal and Canada's only marker in a match that finished up as a 1-1 draw against New Zealand at the 2009 Cyprus Cup today. For the Char-Lan graduate and American college all-star, the game was also her first-ever experience at the international level.

Julien and her Canadian teammates will next see action March 7 versus the Netherlands.

OFSAA boys basketball tips off at Holy Trinity on Monday

The top senior boys basketball teams from 'A' high schools across the province will be in the area next week for the Ontario high school championships, OFSAA, hosted by Holy Trinity.

The Falcons, with an overall season record of 19-9, will be there as the local representative, first seeing action on Monday, March 9 in the St. Joseph's Catholic High School gym. Game time is 11:30 a.m. with Paincourt as the opponent.

Game two for the boys will go on Tuesday on their home court, at either 8:30 or 10:15 a.m., depending on the first-game result.

Crusaders successfully defend high school hockey title

Char-Lan's boys hockey team became the two-time SD&G champions today, clipping North Dundas in a thrilling championship match played on the ice in Long Sault.

The Crusaders got the winning tally with under a minute remaining in the third period when Eric Ming fired a sweet pass over to Steve Rose for the finish as the pair rushed onto the attack against just one defender. 

Char-Lan won the game 3-2, taking the SD&G crown in what was a tightly contested league this season.  The Crusaders got past Holy Trinity 4-2 in an earlier semifinal match with the Falcons going on to blank their Catholic rival, St. Joseph's, in the consolation final, 4-0. Top Char-Lan point-getter on the day was Ramsey Wheeler, while both goalies — Jacob Fourney and Robbie Chapmen — were rock solid between the pipes, seeing action in the semi and final respectively.

The boys have the weekend to celebrate before they look towards EOSSAA which will be played in Williamstown on Tuesday, March 10.

Glens and Rebels finalize playoff schedule

The Battle of Glengarry is set to begin Friday night in Alexandria with the first-place Glens hosting the third-seeded Rebels in game one of the St. Lawrence Division final.  The puck will drop at 8 p.m.

Time to hang up the skates for Maxville Mustangs

The season came to an end for Maxville's Junior C hockey team Wednesday night, as the Mustangs suffered their first road loss of the playoffs, enough to drop the opening-round series to Embrun, four games to two.

For the Maxville club, the game-six 6-3 loss  came on the heels of a debacle on home ice Tuesday night that gave top-seeded Embrun its first lead in the series.

With the hockey season over for the Mustangs, the Panthers now move on to the East Division finals against Vankleek Hill after the Cougars topped St. Isidore in the other semifinal series.

Boys high school hockey playoffs go on Thursday

Playoff action for the S&G title amongst high school boys hockey teams goes Thursday at the Long Sault arena.

After an opening semifinal between North Dundas and St. Joseph's, last year's finalists — Char-Lan and Holy Trinity — will battle, starting at 9:30 a.m. The consolation and championship finals will follow at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively.

The Crusaders are the defending SD&G champs, having clipped the Falcons a year ago.

Pivotal game five goes against Stangs

With the semifinal series tied at two games apiece, Maxville's Junior C Mustangs were looking for a solid performance on home ice Tuesday night against the Embrun Panthers.

After a scoreless opening period, the teams combined for six goals in the middle frame, but it was an Embrun tally just nine seconds into the third period that set the stage as things devolved from there en route to a 10-3 loss. Aside from the defeat, the Mustangs also lost several players during the game — one due to injury and three due to ejections — while the referee struggled to control the game and keep the skaters in check.

Game six will be do-or-die for Maxville, as the Stangs travel to Embrun Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. puck drop. Of note, the boys won both earlier playoff games (one and three) played there.

Mustangs to host Embrun in game 5 Tuesday

A schedule change will see game five of the EOJCHL semifinal series between the Mustangs and Panthers go Tuesday night (March 3) in Maxville with an 8:30 p.m. start time.

The Mustangs are currently tied with Embrun two games each in the best-of-seven series.

Game six will be played in Embrun on Wednesday with a 8 p.m. puck drop.

It WILL be an all-Glengarry division final

Glengarry hockey fans will see an their two Junior B hockey teams battle for in the St. Lawrence Division final series which will begin later this week.

On Sunday night in Casselman, the Char-Lan Rebels scored a 5-2 win against the Vikings to earn the berth in the finals.  Char-Lan had held a 3-0 lead in games before Casselman came back to square the series with three straight wins of their own, forcing this deciding game seven.

Alexandria, meanwhile, had an easier ride of it through the semis, beating out Winchester in five games.

The last time the county rivals met in the division final series was in the 2003-04 season with the Glens winning and advancing as far as the league finals.

Rebels, Mustangs to see playoff action tonight

Two of the county's junior hockey teams will skate in playoff action tonight.

For the Char-Lan Rebels, it is do-or-die as they boys travel to Casselman for game seven in their St. Lawrence Division semifinal series. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.  The victor in this game wins the series and will advance to take on Alexandria in the division finals.

The Maxville Mustangs are looking to take a stranglehold on their series against first-place Embrun, skating into the home-ice tilt with a two-games-to-one lead in the Jr. C East Division semifinal series. Game time at the Maxville arena is 7:30 p.m.

Glens advance to division finals

Alexandria's Junior B hockey team closed of the semifinal round with a 8-3 thrashing of Winchester Saturday night to win the series four games to one and move on to the St. Lawrence Division finals again.  The Glens await an opponent, though, as Casselman and Char-Lan will battle it out in game seven on Sunday night.

Game 7 needed to decide Rebels-Vikings series

Casselman completed its comeback in the St. Lawrence Division semifinal series against  Char-Lan tonight.  Having been down 3-0 in the series, the Vikings won game six to square the battle at three games apiece and force a deciding game seven in Casselman Sunday night.  Game time will be 7 p.m.

Tonight's game in Williamstown had the team's playing evenly through much of the first two periods, before a Vikings goals with three seconds left in the middle frame made it a 4-3 lead for the visitors, en route to a 6-3 victory over the Rebels.

Rebels look to avoid game 7 with home win tonight

The Char-Lan Junior B Rebels won the first three games of their playoff series against Casselman, but came up short in trying to close it out in games four and five.

Game six goes tonight in Williamstown with a 7:45 p.m. start as the Rebs have their third crack at knocking off the Vikings and in the process avoiding a winner-take-all game seven in Casselman on Sunday night.

Upstart Mustangs nab second playoff road win

Maxville's Junior C hockey team nabbed its second win of the opening-round playoff series against Embrun on the road Friday night, toppling the league's powerhouse for the second straight Friday night, this time with a 6-4 effort.

The Mustangs, who finished fourth in the division, now hold a 2-1 lead in games against the Pathers, a team that lost just a handful of games all season.

Game four in the series will go Sunday night in Maxville, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Glens aim to wrap up series Saturday night

With a 10-7 victory in Winchester Friday, the Glens hold a three-games-to-one advantage in their opening-round playoff series against the Hawks and will be looking to finish things off Saturday night on home ice at the Sports Palace in Alexandria.  The puck will drop at 8 p.m.

The Glens will skate in Winchester for game four tonight at 8:15 p.m. with Alexandria holding a 2-1 lead in the series.  Saturday night, the teams will be back at the Sports Palace in an 8 p.m. start.

Casselman comes back to clip Char-Lan in game five

Though the Rebels led from nearly the opening puck drop, getting their first goal just 25 seconds in, Casselman managed to notch an overtime winner to take game five, 8-7, and tighten up the best-of-seven series on Thursday night.

Char-Lan will host the Vikings Saturday night for a 7:45 p.m. faceoff with the Rebels holding a 3-2 games advantage and hoping to finally clinch the series on their third attempt.
