Casselman hammers Alexandria and Char-Lan

The Casselman Vikings seem to have found the answer to beating both of the county's Junior B hockey teams.

Last Thursday in Williamstown, the Vikings blasted Char-Lan 7-1, topping the Rebels for the first time this season in four meetings. The lone Char-Lan goal came from Justin Villeneuve.

On Saturday night in Alexandria, it was much the same story, as Casselman scored on each of its first four shots, en route to a 9-1 romp over the Glens. Hugo Pouliot was the only Glen to find the back of the net. Adam Wensink, who hails from the Maxville area, was among the goal scorers for the Vikings. Alexandria's coach, Marc Sauve, called the game an eye opener, noting he saw too much individual play on the night. For Ray Lavergne, Casselman's coach, his team's great start set the tempo for the game.

Other results

Alexandria 8 (Alexander Stephenson 3, Hugo Pouliot 2, Adam Simpson 2, Leo MacLean) vs Winchester 4

Char-Lan 6 (Derrick Villeneuve 4, Ryan Herrington, Thomas Lang) vs Morrisburg 4

Looking ahead

The Glens will play in Casselman on Thursday, Dec. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, the team will host Akwesasne with an 8 p.m. opening puck drop.  Look for Coach Marc Sauve to be dressed up as Santa Claus.

Char-Lan's weekend action will see the Rebs play at home-and-home series against Winchester. Friday night, the boys will be on the road, while Saturday night the team will host in Williamstown.  Game time is 7:45 p.m.  After the game, The Rebels will host a Christmas dance featuring a special visit from a Johnny Cash and Elvis impersonator.  All friends and fans are welcome.

Junior teams make moves at Dec. 1 deadline (UPDATED)

The county's three junior hockey teams were active at the Dec. 1 deadline that requires squads to cut down to 25 cards that include signed players and open cards.

The Alexandria Junior B Glens dealt Jared McDonald to Char-Lan for the rights to defenceman Sam Rodrigue, a player that had not suited up for the Rebels this season. Rodrigue should add some experience on defence and will fill a 21-year-old card for Alexandria.

As well, Char-Lan released Julian Maynard and Matt Ladouceur, two players who saw limited action with the team. The other move for the Rebels will see the brothers MacDougall reunited, as Grant MacDougall with rejoin his older brother Joey playing in Char-Lan.  Grant had been playing with the Junior A Colts in Cornwall, but was getting only spot icetime.

The Glens also picked up Jonathan Fitzpatrick from Morrisburg. The 18-year-old was looking for a change from the struggling Lions.  Alexandria gave up a 16-year-old card for next season to get him.

In Maxville, the Junior C Mustangs signed Tyler O'Brien who had been playing with the Glens.  Tyler will now wear a Maxville jersey, following in the footsteps of his older brother Shane who was a star player for the Stangs just a couple of years ago.  As well, the Glens will likely affiliate him, so he may see some time playing in Alexandria too.

Boys high school hockey starts Wednesday

The first tournament of the boys high school hockey season is booked for Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the arena in Chesterville.

GDHS will be the only local team in action, playing games at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m.  Char-Lan and Holy Trinity are idle for this tournament, while Tagwi does not compete in the sport.

The winner of the HT vs Confederation match will play for all the marbles and a provincial title at 8 p.m., while the loser will go at 6 p.m. in the bronze medal match.
