Char-Lan girls will compete in OFSAA basketball

Despite a runner-up finish at EOSSAA, the SD&G champion Char-Lan senior girls basketball team has earned a berth to compete at OFSAA which will be hosted by Holy Trinity next week.

HT Falcons win EOSSAA volleyball

The senior boys volleyball team from Holy Trinity won the EOSSAA championship at the Falcons' Nest yesterday, earning a flight path to Oshawa next week where the boys will compete at OFSAA for a provincial title.

GD football game moved to Monday (UPDATED)

A planned return to football action for GDHS has been put off for a few days due to a vaccination clinic.

Tagwi will visit the Alexandria high school next Monday (Nov. 23) for a 1 p.m. match. The game had originally been booked for Thursday, Nov. 19, but both coaches agreed to the change to make the change to avoid the facility use conflict and ensure both squads can field a full complement of players.

The community is invited to come out and support the team as GDHS sees a return to football for the first time since 1983.

Holy Trinity to host football cross-over playoff game

Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School will host the senior football cross-over playoff game on Friday against visiting Brockville Collegiate Institute, the winners of the LGSSAA conference.  Opening kickoff is booked for 1 p.m.

A week ago, the HT Falcons upset Cornwall's St. Joseph's in a defensive battle to capture their first Seaway league title.

Senior girls basketball final set

Once again, the SD&G senior girls basketball title will come down to a battle between Char-Lan and Holy Trinity, with the championship match slated for Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Falcons' Nest.  Tip-off will be 1 p.m.

Once again, you have the power to help make Alexandria the next Hockeyville by getting involved in the local intiative that recognizes the significance of the sport in the community.

Check out the stories already online, and post your thoughts and photos in support of this initiative.

Organizers Kim Gadbois and Dan Boisvenue encourage schools and groups to jump on board, along with individuals from the community and former residents, to support Alexandria as Hockeyville.

Plan your weekend Junior B hockey schedule

Junior B hockey will take over the rinks in Alexandria and Williamstown on Saturday, Nov. 14, when the Glens and Rebels will host Winchester and Casselman respectively.

Action will get underway in Williamstown at 7:45 p.m., while the game at the Glengarry Sports Palace is booked for an 8 p.m. start.

Away games for the team this week include Alexandria t Casselman on Thursday night and Char-Lan at Morrisburg on Friday night.

Double-barrelled high school volleyball action in county Wednesday

Two high school gymnasiums in the county will be reverberating with the sound of volleyballs Wednesday afternoon as a pair of schools will host SD&G championship matches.

At Holy Trinity, the Falcons will be vying for a fifth straight senior title, playing Heritage, while at GDHS, the top-seeded Gaels juniors will host Heritage's junior squad. Both matches will be served up at 1 p.m.

Maxville Mustangs double Vankleek Hill

In Junior C hockey action last Saturday, the Maxville Mustangs travelled to Vankleek Hill, dominating the Cougars in an 8-4 victory.

The host side actually held a 4-3 advantage after two period, but a five-goal outpouring in the final frame secured victory for the Stangs.

For Richard Mulligan, it was a five-point night (1 goal, 4 assists). Other multiple point-getters were Alain Begin (2 goals), Grant Mitchell (1 goal, 2 assists), and Brandon Gilmour (1 goal, 1 assist). Also hitting the scoresheet with goals were Marc Bergeron, Mathieu Houle, and Kyle Jeaurond, while nabbing helpers were Jeff Larose, Zach Herfkins, and Ryan Brady-Gratton.

Action ahead

On Friday, Nov. 13, the Mustangs (4-7-1) will play in Gatineau.

Next home game is booked for Saturday, Nov. 14, when Maxville will host East Ottawa. Start time is 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball playoffs tip off Tuesday

Playoff action in A girls high school basketball will tip off Tuesday at Char-Lan and Holy Trinity as the top two seeds are slated to host senior quarters and semis.

The Crusaders and Falcons will both play at 4 p.m. in their respective semis, having earned first-round byes. Tagwi will play in a quarter-final match against RO at 2 p.m. at the Falcons' Nest, with the other quarter featuring Heritage and Seaway at the H. Taylor Coombs Gymnasium.

In the junior division, Char-Lan, GDHS, and Holy Trinity are all involved with games scheduled to be played at Seaway and Rothwell-Osnabruck on Tuesday morning.

The championship finals in both divisions are booked for Thursday at the home of the top remaining seed.

High school boys volleyball playoffs served up

Boys high school volleyball playoff action will be served up today, with GDHS hosting the junior semifinals, while Holy Trinity will host the senior division playoffs.

At 1 p.m., the top-seeded GD juniors will play against Holy Trinity, followed by the other semi between Heritage and Tagwi.

At the Falcons' Nest, the first-place senior team from HT will host GD, followed by the other senior semi between Heritage and Tagwi.

The SD&G finals are booked for Thursday to be hosted by the top remaining seed.

Le Relais to host junior girls soccer playoffs

Le Relais will host the Precott-Russell high school league junior girls soccer playoffs on Tuesday.

Les Intrepides will play Hawkesbury at 9 a.m., followed 90 minutes later by the other semifinal that features L'Escale and St. Thomas.

The consolation final is booked for noon, while the championship match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Local ladies look for your support to attend worlds

A local ladies broomball team will be competing at the world championships this winter, and the ladies are looking for your help to represent our region.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, there will be a fund raising chicken dinner held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cornwall Legion building, located on Water Street in Cornwall.  Your ticket of just $10 will help support the ladies and their trip to worlds.

Glens will play twice at home this weekend

There will be a pair of Junior B hockey games at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria this weekend, as the Glens host games Friday night against Athens and Saturday night against Morrisburg. The latter was originally scheduled to be the home opener last month, but was rescheduled when the ice was not ready.

Game time for both contests is 8 p.m.

Char-Lan will host South Grenville on Saturday

The Char-Lan Junior B Rebels will host South Grenville in hockey action Saturday, Oct. 24, with a 7:45 p.m.

The Rebs will be looking to snap a three-game losing slide. Last weekend, the boys were clobbered 10-3 by Westport, a team that features two former Char-Lan players, Max Ming and Danny Hincks, both of who are first-year students at Queen's University in Kingston.  The Rebs also lost 5-3 in Athens.

Ramsey Wheeler scored a pair against Westport, with the other Char-Lan tally coming from Ryan Herrington. In the match against Athens, goals came from Dylan Munro, Pat Mainville, and Justin Villeneuve.

Soccer AGM booked for tonight

The Glengarry Soccer League's annual general meeting will be held tonight, Oct. 20, at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria, starting at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Mustangs win on home ice

Maxville's Junior C hockey team scored a much needed win on home ice last Saturday night, beating St. Isidore 6-4.

Richard Mulligan paced the offence with a three-point night (2 goals, 1 assist), with Brandon Gilmour also scoring a pair and adding one helper. Other marksmen were Ryan Brady-Gratton and Mike Muldoon, as Logan Gunn got the win between the pipes.

A night earlier in Embrun, the Mustangs took it on the chin with a 7-0 loss.

Looking ahead, on Saturday, Oct. 24, Maxville will host the Rockland Nationals in a 7:30 p.m. start. On Sunday, the Stangs will travel to Vankleek Hill for a match also beginning at 7:30 p.m.

High school football schedule this week

Today, Thursday, Oct. 15, Holy Trinity will host a pair of high school football games.

  • junior game @ 12:30 vs General Vanier
  • senior game @ 2:30 vs St. Thomas

There will also be a junior match at St. Thomas in Russell (2 p.m. kickoff) against St. Joseph's.

On Friday, Oct. 16, games are scheduled at St. Joseph's (noon kickoff for a senior contest against St. Francis) and CCVS at 2 p.m. as the Raiders will host the visiting Tagwi Warriors.

Peewee Wildcats advance to final

Last Sunday in their final regular season game, the Peewee 138 Motor and Tire Sales Cornwall Wildcats held their own against the Mews Orleans Bengals, winning the game 25-23.  This marks the first time ever that a NCAFA Peewee  team from Cornwall advances into the A/B final round.  

The offensive line, led by Joel Cheffer stood strong once again, allowing quarterback Jeremy Pike to air out the ball to wide receiver Chris Millward for a touchdown.  Cornwall’s other two majors came from running backs Rhyland Taylor and Justin Cloutier.  Kicker Bailey Malyon pitched in with a game-winning field goal in the third quarter.  Cornwall’s defence was flying around the whole game, with two sacks of the quarterback -- one by Curtis Girouard and the other by Travis Gaspe.  The entire defence played a spectacular game, giving the ball back to the offence numerous times. Girouard and Alex Guindon also recovered two live balls on kickoffs.  

Hockey game to support hospice scheduled for Saturday

On Saturday, Oct. 10, a charity hockey game will take over the ice at the Civic Complex in Cornwall, all in support of the hospice.

The event will see members of the Cornwall Junior A Colts face off against celebrities, and you can be in the stands for just $2. Tickets are available at the complex box office.
