Round two set in senior men's Greenspon Cup battle

Two games that were interrupted by storms last Friday, finally have been played, and the matchups are now set for round two of the GSL's senior men's Greenspon Cup.

Char-Lan prevailed in overtime against the Drillers on Monday night 4-3, but both teams move on since the Drillers have the best record among the three first-round losing squads.

In another opening game from Sunday, Greenfield clipped McCrimmon in another extra time battle, also 4-3.

Round two of the Greenspoon Cup will begin July 2 with a game between Char-Lan and Greenfield to be played at the Island Park in Alexandria.  Kickoff is slated for 8:30 p.m.

Two days later also at the Island Park, the Drillers will take on Glen Nevis in another 8:30 p.m. start.

The Greenspon Cup final, originally scheduled for July 4 following the ladies cup championship match, will be played next week sometime, on a date yet to be determined.

Spectacular rollover highlights speedway action

A spectacular rollover involving a driver from St. Andrew's West punctuated a full night of action last Sunday at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Gage Morin, aged 16, was driving car #16 in the modifieds division when he was involved in what Speedway General Manager Carol Morin-Flanagan describes as "an extreme heart-stopping rollover" during his heat race on June 28. Fortunately, the driver was only a little shaken up and able to walk away from the incident just fine.  The car, however, was another story.

The driver is sponsored by two Glengarry companies: D & A Tractor Sales (Don Routhier) and and B & L Metals (Andy Lubbers and Dave Bissonnette).

This Sunday, July 5, the schedule at the speedway includes a 50-lap race in the MrDIRTcar Sportsman class, the third race in the Mohawk Race Parts Pro-stock series, a modifieds feature, and a mini-stocks feature.

Swimming pool to reopen Monday, July 6

Minor football playoffs continue

On Sunday, spring minor football will hold its final games to mark the end of the season.  The bantam title will come down to a battle between 138 Motor and Tire Sales and Laframboise Mechanical.

Last weekend, a playoff semifinal proved to be the most entertaining of the weekend, with the outcome in doubt right down to the final play when 138 Motor and Tire Sales Bantam Wildcats edged out Malone 37-30. Outstanding play on offence saved Cornwall from a late charge by Malone. Quarterback Jarret St. John accounted for four TDs, two with his legs and two with his arm to receivers Ryan O'Rourke and Nick Gauthier. Running back Matt Mondoux proved too fast for the Malone defenders, scoring two touchdowns of his own last Sunday, including a 100-yard return of the opening kickoff. Cornwall played inspired football for their injured comrades and valued starters Owen Stevens and Brody Tate.

The other bantam semi saw the United Counties Warriors fall to the Laframboise Mechanical Wildcats 8-1 with Ryan Regnier accounting for the only major score in what was a tough defensive, hard-hitting battle.

Midgets

Two Wildcat Midget squads squared off last weekend with the Scotia McCleod Cats defeating the 138 Motor and Tire Sales team 22-9. Nick Howard led the way for Scotia scoring two touchdowns on the day. The game was much closer than the score indicates as Scotia held a 15-9 lead until the last minute of the fourth quarter, when turnovers proved fatal for 138.  Scotia will now travel to Russel for this Sunday's final against the well-rested Renegades.

Russell earned a win last weekend on a forfeit when Malone was unable to field enough players.

Peewees

At the Peewee level the Thompson Rosemount Wildcats advanced to the final with a sound victory over Russel 30-0. The Wildcats' attack was led by running back Rhyland Taylor who would find the end zone a couple of times on the day as well as the running and passing of quarterback Jeremy Pike with one of his passes connecting for a score to Derek Dionne. On defence the team earned a shutout on the leadership of Shane Saunders, Nick Baker, and Josh Hodgson.

Mosquitos

In Russell last Sunday, the Wildcats Red mosquito team lost to a tough Russell squad 40-12. Russell play in Cornwall tomorrow against the Blackcats in the final.

Tykes

The C2 Wildcats were on the road last weekend, losing to the number one Russell side, while the C1 squad defeated Russel #2 with a 48-18 effort. The C1s will next travel back to Russell tomorrow for the tyke final against the hometown Renegades, a team that remains undefeated.

Warriors eliminate Cornwall Wildcats #3 in spring football playoffs

The United Counties Warriors bantam football team eliminated Cornwall's #3 Wildcats squad on Wednesday night in a playoff opener played on the pristine pitch at Tagwi.

The victory for the Warriors was the second straight against this team, having beaten the Wildcats last Sunday in Cornwall to finish off the regular season.

UC ended up third in the standings with a record of 4 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss, even with Cornwall #2. However, the #2 Wildcats earned the second seed, and a bye through the first playoff round, based on fewer points allowed.

Cornwall #3, meanwhile, had won just once in the regular season, though did have some chances against the Warriors on Wednesday night before UC's defence slammed the door twice stymying Cornwall with goal to go.

UC nonetheless prevailed in the battle with a 22-13 effort and will move on to play Cornwall #2 on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall. During the regular season, the Warriors tied the #2 squad 12-12 in their only meeting.

Great Raisin River Foot Race returns soon

The Great Raisin River Foot Race will again be part of the Williamstown Fair in August, though runners are encouraged to register early, before June 30, if they wish to order a special T-shirt that recognizes the history of one of the community's institutions, the Nor'Westers and Loyalist Museum.

This year, the commemorative T-shirt is an option, as organizers wanted to keep the race entry fee as low as possibly to encourage family participation.  Entry to the August 9 race costs just $15 and can be completed online by clicking here. T-shirts can also be ordered through this link for runners, while others interested in ordering just the T-shirt ($15) should call Race Directors Sheila and Wendell Lafave at 613-347-3206.

Special Clinic

On the Wednesday prior to race day, noted runner Bill Rodgers, a four-time winner of both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon, will visit Williamstown for a free clinic. The event will be held August 5, starting at 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds, to be followed by a "friendship run."

Tagwi ruggers wins big with running game

Tagwi's senior boys rugby team dominated Holy Trinity today on the scoreboard, winning 27-5.  The Warriors were successful with a strong running game that found openings in the Falcons' defence.

HT managed the opening try, but from there the scoring was all Tagwi.  Nonetheless, the Falcons did threaten at times, coming close to the try line on several occasions before they were stymied by the Warriors.

With the win, Tagwi still has a shot at top spot in the SD&G standings, and with it a berth at EOSSAA.  All that will be determined by Friday when the regular-season schedule wraps up.

The Warriors' other teams, varsity girls and junior boys, both have already been delclared SD&G champions.

Minor football roundup from last weekend

Week 3 of football for the CMFA Wildcats went down this past Sunday under windy and chilly conditions but mother nature couldn't spoil the fun in what proved to be an entertaining afternoon.

The Tyke level saw Cornwall's C2 cats vs their hometown rival C3 cats with C2 pulling out the win 48-27. Special mention goes to Simon Martel and Justin Lamoureux for their intense play on the day. The other Tyke matchup featured two Russel teams with R1 defeating R2 by a score of 22-18.

At the Mosquito level Cornwalls Blackcats travelled to Russel and improved to 2-0 on the season with a 22-6 win. All three of Cornwalls majors as well as two 2 point conversions were provided by standout running back Kaelan Leroux. Cornwalls defence was tough stopping a first and goal for Russel that resulted in a fumble recovery for Alex Winters. A total team effort on defence lead to the solid win for the Blackcats.

The winning on the road continued at the PeeWee level with the Hunt Insurace Wildcats also improving to 2-0 by dominating the hometown Russel team 35-6. Quarterback Bailey Malyon had a huge day for his team rushing for two td's,one on a sneak and the other from 11 yards out. Malyon would also hook up on a pass of twenty yards to wideout Chris Millward following a fumble recovery by Nolan Terrance. Maylon's legs proved to be for more than running the ball as he also booted five extra points. Hunt's other two majors came on the defensive side of the ball on outstanding play by Justin Cloutier who had a big sack that caused a fumble, returned another fumble for a score, and also had a 75 yard interception return for a touchdown. Justin Won also chipped in with an interception for Cornwall.

The first Bantam game of the day featured the Freedom55 Wildcats against visitors Malone. A defensive struggle kept this game low in scoring, resulting in a final deadlock of 6-6. The out of town game featured Russel in Plattsburgh with Russel posting a 44-0 shutout.

The last Bantam game of the afternoon pitted 138 motor and tire sales versus Laframboise Mechanical in what turned out to be a hard hitting defensive battle. The game remained scoreless till the fourth quarter until 138 finally took control and went on to win 22-0.
138 got two touchdowns from running back Matt Mondoux on runs of 30 and 20 yards and a third Td on a sneak from quarterback Derek McDonald.McDonald also converted a td on the ground as well as throwing for two points to Bryan belanger. Laframboise controlled the ball for most of the first half with strong running from Brent Massia, but failed to punch it in for the score. Massia and Linebacker Ryan Regnier each had an interception to stall 138 drives. Quarterback Josh Millward also had a strong showing for Laframboise. Strong defensive perfomances by Owen Steven's who blocked a punt and Ryan Robertson with a fumble recovery late in the game helped pace the 138 squad on to victory.

At the Midget level the 138 motor and tire sales team played host to visitors Malone, a back and forth battle in the first two quarters had 138 up 26-18 at the half. The second half proved more one sided as the cats would pull away for the 44-18 win. Three of Cornwall's touchdowns would come on the ground with one for Cody Young, one for Nick Debelfuille and the third a 50 yard dash for Derek Michaud. Debelfuille also had an interception on the day. Wideout Bruno Cambolo also found the endzone on a pass from Kevin Alenik. Cambolo had a catch on defence as well, hauling in an interception. Jesse Mcphail provided some highlights for 138 as well returning a Malone kickoff 65 yards for a score. Excellent blocking from massive offensive lineman Kyle Handy opened up big holes for his runners.

The other two Cornwall squads faced off in the other Midget game at Joe St.Denis field with the Scotia Mcleod Wildcats posting their second straight shutout in a 14-0 win over Wilson's funeral. Scotia's ground game has been solid all season and Sunday proved no different as both of their touchdowns came on the ground from running backs Jordan Wurah and Nick Howard who are proving themselves to be a two headed monster out of the backfield. Kyle Smith had a two point conversion on a pass from Owen O'Reilly. Team effort on defence kept Wilson's from sustaining any pressure.

The third Midget game was played in Plattsburgh with visitors Russel blanking the home team in a 22-0 win.

Looking ahead, Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall will host a full day of games on Sunday, May 24.
