On Monday in Dunvegan, the final session will be held, offering a last chance to those referees who were unable to attend the previous one. The workshop will be conducted at the Dunvegan Recreation Centre, beginning at 7:30 p.m., led by Referee-in-Chief Kenny MacLeod.
Any questions should be directed to the GSL office at 613-525-0614.
Le Relais senior boys dejected by soccer loss
Submitted by sportseditor on 6 May 2009 - 12:05pmIn a repeat of the Prescott-Russell high school boys senior soccer semifinal, a game forced by a league appeal six months ago, Le Relais fell to St. Francis Xavier.
The 1-0 loss came despite Les Intrepides dominating the second half, the St. Francis goal scored on a penalty kick.
Le Relais had won the league title last October and with it a spot at EOSSAA, but St. Francis appealed the standings, winning the appeal in a meeting that was only held in December. The school had been pegged in fifth place at the end of the season, with the successful appeal moving the team into fourth and thus a league playoff spot.
Le Relais was notified of the decision in April, ordered to redo the semifinal today in Alexandria.
With the defeat for Les Intrepides, St. Francis will go on to a new Prescott-Russell final against L'Escale, while Le Relais is left to lick its wounds.
The Alexandria school has already petitioned the EOSSAA convenor for an exception that would still allow Les Intrepides to vie for the regional title. In the meantime, the boys are preparing for the Franco tournament to be held later this month in Toronto.
HT Falcons advance to baseball final
Submitted by sportseditor on 6 May 2009 - 11:56amHoly Trinity's baseball team scored a berth in the SD&G championship match as a result of wins against La Citadelle and GDHS on Tuesday. The Falcons will battle Catholic rival St. Joseph's for the local title in the coming days. Date and time to be announced.

High school baseball hits the diamond Tuesday
Submitted by sportseditor on 4 May 2009 - 12:55pmAfter last week's edition of The News went to press, an updated schedule was released for the SD&G high school baseball tournament to be played Tuesday, May 5. The event will see teams from two Glengarry schools among the six competing.
GDHS and Holy Trinity find themselves in the same pool, joining La Citadelle.
Holy Trinity's first game is slated for 10 a.m. against La Citadelle, with GDHS playing against Les Patriotes at 2 p.m. The Gaels and Falcons will then close out the tourney with the last match of the day beginning at 6 p.m.
The winner of the pool will advance to a championship match tentatively booked for May 15.
GD's team is coached by Wayne Lapierre, Randy Larocque, and Marc Sauve, while the Holy Trinity bench boss is Jeff McAllister.
The other pool includes St. Joseph's, CCVS, and Rothwell-Osnabruck, with games on Tuesday at 8 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m.
All games will be played at Legion Park in Cornwall, located east of the Civic Complex along the waterfront.

High school soccer opening day
Submitted by sean on 30 April 2009 - 1:42pm
The high school soccer season opened for regular-season action on Wednesday with games at Holy Trinity and Tagwi.
Char-Lan's junior teams, both the boys and girls Crusaders squads, seemed to enjoy playing on the Holy Trinity pitch, scoring a pair of wins. Playing conditions were pleasant for the time of year with sun and a light wind, while the field was holding up well, especially considering that a day earlier a senior rugby game was played on it in the rain.
For the Char-Lan girls, it was a 2-0 victory over the Falcons with one marker coming in each half as goalkeeper Keri-ann McNaughton-Seguin earned the shutout.
The boys fought for a 3-1 win against a host Holy Trinity side that managed some sustained pressure at times in what was a physical match. One Falcon was sanctioned twice for rough play, as Holy Trinity was forced to play the last 15 minutes short-handed. Brandon Rombough backstopped Char-Lan to the opening-day win, making fine saves when called upon.
Char-Lan will host the next junior soccer tournament on Friday, May 8 in Williamstown with boys and girls squads from Tagwi, GDHS, and Holy Trinity visiting. The action will kick off at noon.
Senior soccer begins for local teams on Thursday, May 7 with games at Char-Lan, starting at 1 p.m., and GDHS, starting at 11 a.m.
Other day-one junior soccer results: GDHS girls blanked Seaway 7-0 and Russell 3-0. Lauren Lalonde earned the pair of shutouts in goal. The GDHS boys split their action on the day with a 4-2 win against Seaway and a 2-0 loss to Russell. Tagwi boys and girls scores will be posted here when made available to The News.
Soccer is back
Submitted by sportseditor on 23 April 2009 - 10:27pmThe first soccer game of the season took to the pitch at GDHS in Alexandria today, though coaches were quick to point out it was just an exhibition match between Le Relais' Franco girls team and the senior Gaels squad.
In windy, cool conditions on a surprisingly decent field for this time of year, GD prevailed 2-0 over the cross-town girls who are tuning up for next month's Tournoi Franco Ontarien to be held in the Toronto area.

Meanwhile for the Gaels, it is all about getting ready for the SD&G league season which officially gets underway the first week of May. GD will continue with exhibition action on Monday, playing a pair of games in Williamstown. The Gaels will take on rival Char-Lan at 12:30 p.m. and CCVS at 2 p.m. A year ago, the Crusaders knocked off GD in the SD&G championship match to advance to EOSSAA and eventually OFSAA. Char-Lan's other game on Monday goes at 11 a.m. against CCVS.
The boys are of course at it as well, with both GDHS' and Char-Lan's teams seeing action on Monday in Williamstown. The Crusaders will play the Raiders at 11 a.m. and the Gaels at 12:30 p.m. GD's second match will be at 2 p.m. against CCVS.
Later next week, both of GDHS' senior teams will head to Toronto to play in the Brian Filion Memorial Tournament as a final warm-up for league action.
Le Relais will send both its boys and girls teams to the Franco tournament, while the school also awaits EOSSAA. Playing in the Prescott-Russell league last fall, the senior boys, senior girls, and junior boys all won their respective divisions and qualified to advance.
Beautiful weather ushers in 37th edition of the Raisin River Canoe Race
Submitted by sportseditor on 19 April 2009 - 8:03pmGlorious sunshine and a 15-degree temperature welcomed competitors in the 37th running of the Raisin River Canoe Race today as paddlers contended with low water levels on the river and a shortened course. In all, 176 canoes and kayaks reached the finish line in Williamstown after covering the course of the race that started at Cemetary Road west of Martintown.
Water levels and flow rate were among the lowest in the history of the race. This forced organizers to adjust the starting line, making this the shortest ever course, though many paddlers commented they enjoyed the shorter distance and earlier finishing time.

The April 22 edition of The Glengarry News will feature a full wrap-up of the race, along with results and photos. As well, more photos will soon be posted in our online photo gallery.
Prints of photos are available for purchase. For more information, click here , or call the office at 613-525-2020 to see if we have photographs of you. Have your canoe or kayak number ready.

Canoe Race update: low water levels and sunny conditions to prevail
Submitted by sportseditor on 18 April 2009 - 5:32pmOrganizers of the annual Raisin River Canoe Race had been hoping for some rain, but the drizzle Saturday morning did little to improve water levels on the river. Since the last steady rain 10 days ago, water levels have been steadily dropping. While on Tuesday, the flow rate was measured at 230 cubic feet per second, by Thursday it had dropped to 171, and on Sunday for race day, it is expected to be even lower. By contrast, the event last year saw near-record levels, with a flow rate measured in excess of 1200.
Paddlers will be advised that due to the low water levels, there will be areas in the river where they may need to get out of the canoes or kayaks and walk. Rocks will be a prevalent hazard, especially at the three sets of rapids. However, Josianne Sabourin of the Raisin Region Conservation Authority says the dam at Martintown should be okay for those who choose to jump it. Portaging, of course, remains an option, though for many spectators, the splashes and spills at the dam are the highlight of the event.
Sabourin has also confirmed the race will run the full distance from St. Andrew's West to Williamstown. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the school in St. Andrew's, with breakfast available across the street at the church hall. The first boats will take to the water at 10:30 a.m.
As for the latest forecast on conditions aside from the low water levels, Environment Canada predicts sun and a high of 14 C.
GSL schedules mandatory soccer referee meeting
Submitted by sportseditor on 18 April 2009 - 1:08pmThe Glengarry Soccer League has scheduled a mandatory referees' meeting to be held on Thursday, April 23. Referees can expect to be contacted by the GSL office. The league's referee-in-chief will conduct the meeting. Questions should be directed to the GSL office at 613-525-0614.
Badminton takes over high school gymnasiums
Submitted by sportseditor on 18 April 2009 - 1:04pmLast week, the sport of badminton dominated the high school schedule, as the SD&G championships were held.
Holy Trinity, largely on the strength of 4 medals, prevailed to nab the overall school title. With the results, two gold and two silver medals, six Falcon athletes in all qualified for the regional tournament, EOSSAA, to be held April 22 in Casselman. The student-athletes advancing are Kevin Aleinik, Ben McAllister, Jordan Rochon, Siobhan Levere, Paige Jeaurond, and Stacy Novy.
Two GDHS Gaels also will be going to EOSSAA. Vanessa St. Pierre and Shane Pilon won gold in the mixed doubles at the SD&G tourney.

Raisin River conditions test organizers of annual canoe race
Submitted by sportseditor on 14 April 2009 - 11:44pmWith recent dry weather, river conditions on the Raisin may become an issue as organizers of the annual canoe race plan for the April 19 event which is scheduled to begin in St. Andrew's West and wind along the river through Martintown to Williamstown.
While the flow rate at last year's race was over 1200 cubic feet per second, the measurement on Tuesday was 230. According to the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, rates can increase dramatically a couple of days after a steady rainfall, though no precipitation is forecast for the area until Sunday.
As happened three years ago, organizers can shorten the race when water levels are low. However, doing so would create another issue, since the normal starting point in this situation is at the bridge across the river on Delaney Road. That bridge is undergoing repairs and is closed to traffic, meaning canoes would have to be dropped off from the north side with no parking available, while cars would also need to turn around on the narrow country road.
The ideal solution would be some rain, though. Stay tuned!

Glengarry hockey action continues Friday, Saturday
Submitted by sportseditor on 8 April 2009 - 10:03pmThough the county's three junior teams have hung up the skates on the season, a number of midget-aged players still have games to be played this weekend.
On Friday, the Glengarry Sports Palace will be the site of the second annual Spring Classic, a tournament that brings together midget-eligible hockey players in a format that has teams from Alexandria, Lancaster, Lochiel, and Kenyon battling it out for county bragging rights. Coaches are Paul Meldrum, Dan Giroux, Vince Collard, and Marc Massia.
The puck drops on the action at 9 a.m., with a B final slated for 2 p.m. followed by the A championship match at 3 p.m.
A game at noon on Saturday will see two midget house squads, the #1 and #4 Glens coached by Norm Seguin and Dan Giroux respectively, square off for the league title. The teams split two earlier hard-fought matches, so it comes down to a one-game winner-take-all.

The junior hockey season officially ended Tuesday night
Submitted by sportseditor on 8 April 2009 - 11:53amAn otherwise terrific season came to a disppointing halt Tuesday night on home ice at the Sports Palace where the Junior B Glens were swept in the EOJBHL championship final series by Ottawa West.
The 3-2 loss in game four was the closest contest of the series, as the Golden Knights iced a disciplined system that the Glens were unable to counter.

As one of the team's board members, Jim Picken, puts it, "Too bad about the loss last night; however, the organization and team should be very proud of the accomplishments made this season." As well, he thanks everyone who contributed to the Glens' fine season, adding, " Let's get started on next year."
Among Alexandria's accomplisments this year, the team was first in the regular season St. Lawrence Division standings, won the division playoff title against Char-Lan, and captured the conference division title versus Gananoque.
Glens need to win Tuesday night at home to avoid end of season
Submitted by sportseditor on 6 April 2009 - 11:40pmAn impressive 2008-09 Junior B hockey season could end Tuesday night in Alexandria unless the Glens can find a way to overcome the disciplined Ottawa West Golden Knights and their potent offensive attack.
The Knights grabbed a three-games-to-one lead in the EOJBHL championship series on Monday night in Ottawa with a 9-4 effort.
Game four is slated for an 8 p.m. start Tuesday night at the Glengarry Sports Palace, and the boys will be looking for your support to extend the series.
It's a big hole to climb out of for the Glens in the EOJBHL finals
Submitted by sportseditor on 4 April 2009 - 12:04pmWith a disappointing 6-2 loss on home ice Friday night, the Alexandria Junior B Glens have yet to find the win column in the EOJBHL championship final series, now down two games to none.
The Ottawa West Golden Knights appear to be sharp coming off their hard-fought conference final series that went the distance, while the Glens, who had it easy with a sweep over Gananoque, still haven't found a way to kick it into high gear.
The two-time defending league champions have the weekend to regroup, next playing Monday night in Ottawa before a Tuesday night tilt for game four back in Alexandria.
Glens find themselves down a game coming home
Submitted by sportseditor on 3 April 2009 - 12:44pmAfter dropping game one of the EOJBHL championship series in Ottawa on Thursday night, the Alexandria Junior B Glens will take to home ice at the Sports Palace tonight, looking to even the series at a game apiece.
Game one saw the Alexandria boys first on the board with a tally by Mikael Besset-Morin, but from there it was four unanswered by the Golden Knights. Goaltender Dominic Quann was kept busy throughout the match, making 38 saves in the losing cause.
Game two goes tonight with an 8 p.m. puck drop in Alexandria.
