UCDSB opens fields for school use

office May 12, 2014 - 5:08pm

The UCDSB announced today that limited use of school fields will now be allowed, but only for school sports.  Community groups remain in limbo.  Here's the full release from the school board:

The use of UCDSB school fields resumes for school activities only - effective immediately - thanks to a warm, sunny, and windy weekend! Use by community groups will be re-evaluated on May 15, pending the weather forecast for the week, in order to ensure the fields are ready for higher usage. We appreciate your patience with this issue, and look forward to seeing kids on the fields again.

Glengarry Gaels peewee and bantam football openers post-poned

office May 9, 2014 - 3:32pm

The official word came down today from Glengarry Gaels football club co-president Jeff Dorn: the scheduled peewee and bantam openers booked for Sunday have been post-poned to later in the season. (The mosquito and tyke games will go ahead in Cornwall, indoors at the fieldhouse).

Here's Dorn's release:

As this might be a first in the history of spring Football Enjoy Mothers Day with out dragging your Mother out to Football on Sunday. Treat her well for all she does for spending MOTHERS DAY watching you play football.

Sports options for fans tonight

office May 8, 2014 - 4:36pm

If you are looking for some live sports action to take in tonight, the Alexandria Ladies Ball Hockey League will open its season tonight at the Glengarry Sports Palace, with games at 8 and 9 p.m.

Football openers set for Sunday, May 11

office May 8, 2014 - 3:57pm

Spring community youth football is set to kick off Sunday, but field conditions are playing havoc with the schedule.

The Glengarry Gaels had been scheduled to host three games (mosquito, peewee, bantam) in Alexandria at the GDHS field, but the school board has banned all community use of fields until at least May 15. That ruling sent the football organization scrambling.

So here's what we know so far:

The Glengarry tykes will play as scheduled on Sunday, starting at 10:30am vs Cornwall #1. And at 1pm, the Glengarry mosquitos will play vs Cornwall #1. Both of these games will be at the Cornwall fieldhouse.

That leaves the Gaels peewee and bantam games in limbo, but Glengarry co-president Costa Zarifi says he is working on field options that will see the games played as scheduled, just somewhere else. Stay tuned!

Update on sports fields usage

office May 8, 2014 - 1:06pm

Our May 7 edition included, on page A9, a story about the delayed start to the spring sports season and the impact on community sports as well.  Here's an update to our story, a message from the UCDSB regarding school fields under their domain (e.g. Char-Lan, GDHS, Tagwi):

Media Release
Immediate Release: May 7, 2014
UCDSB Sports Fields to Remain Closed Until May 15

(Brockville) - Sports fields at schools throughout the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) will remain closed for after school sporting events until May 15, 2014 to maintain their quality and avoid the need for maintenance closures later in sports season, said Chief Information and Facilities Officer Jeremy Hobbs.

The decision to preserve sports fields will mean a short delay in their use after school hours by public and school sports teams. Recess activities at schools will not be affected.

The decision to delay after school use of school sports fields is due to the wet and unusually cool spring weather. Use of the fields too early can result in damage which will affect their quality throughout the remainder of the spring, summer and fall. “We want to give our sports fields adequate time to dry and grow so that they will be in the best possible shape for play,” said Hobbs on Tuesday. “In the past, community groups have expressed concern about the condition of fields in the peak of the season and though the fields may now appear dry, we need to give the grass some time to take root to ensure safe, playable conditions later this summer. The Facilities department will continue to monitor each situation, however we have every confidence that the majority of our sports fields will be available for after school use by May 15.”
