County hockey players hit the ice tonight in QMJHL playoffs

Two boys from the county will skate with their respective QMJHL clubs in first-round playoff hockey action tonight.

Roddie Sandiland and his Cape Breton Screaming Eagles are facing the Charlottetown Islanders, looking to even the series that they currently trail 2 games to 1.

The Gatineau Olympiques and Kieran Craig are taking on the Drummondville Voltigeurs, and it's do-or-die for them tonight, as they trail 3-0.

The county's two players in the Quebec Major Junior A Hockey League are both playoff bound, with the regular season having concluded last weekend.

Roddie Sandilands is a defenceman with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, who finished fifth in the Eastern Division (40-22-1-5) and will face off with the Charlottetown Islanders.

Kieran Craig is a rookie forward for the Gatineau Olympiques. He and his team (23-39-4-2) will take on the Drummondville Voltigeurs in round one.

Colts down Rangers in Tuesday night CCHL hockey

Dean Derouchie had a pair of goals to lead the Cornwall Colts to a 6-2 victory over the Gloucester Rangers at the Ed Lumley Arena, on Tuesday night.

Derouchie scored a power play and shorthanded goal as the Colts improved to 38-13-4-3 for 83 points and sole possession of second overall in the CCHL.

Derouchie now has 19 goals on the season.

Chris Mammas (with his 11th of the year), Jeremy McFarlane (11th), Shawn Baird (6th), and Roddie Sandilands (3rd) also scored for the Colts. David Poirier added three assists, while Keegan Mulhearn chipped in with a pair of assists.

The Colts outshot the Rangers 39-29, with Liam Lascelle making 27 saves for the win.

Three Stars were First Star David Poirier (COR), Second Star Dean Derouchie (COR), and Third Star Darius Gibson (GLO).

Although the game was played in Cornwall, it was considered a road game for the Colts due to the game scheduled for Feb. 12 in Gloucester being postponed as a result of poor weather.

The Colts' next home game is Thursday, March 2, versus the Cumberland Grads. Game time is 7:30pm at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

CCHL Colts suffer first loss of season on home ice

Kanata scored four third-period goals to upset the Cornwall Colts 5-4 at the Ed Lumley Arena. It was the Colts’ first home loss of the season.

Cornwall’s offence was led by Nick Lalonde who had a goal (his fifth of the season) and two assists. Tanner Spink (4) recorded a goal and an assist.  Sebastian Dirven (2) and Roddie Sandilands (1) also scored.

The Colts outshot the Lasers 38-30, with Matt Efros suffering the loss in goal.

The Colts record falls to 5-2-0-1 for 11 points on the season. That’s good enough for 2nd place in the tight Robinson Division.

Three Stars were First Star Paul Vella (Kanata), Dan Porter (Kanata) and Tanner Spink (Colts).

The Colts next game is Saturday, Sept. 24, in Ottawa, versus the Jr. Senators. Cornwall returns to the Ed Lumley Arena next Thursday to host Smiths Falls in the first game of a home-and-home series with the Bears. Game time is 7:30pm.
